What do you think of Sheffield?

Hi all,

I am conducting some quick and dirty research about Sheffield, and I would be grateful for any input from you guys.

Basically, all I need to know is:

What does Sheffield mean to you?

This could be thoughts, words, opinions etc. I am especially interested in it's pros and cons and your perceptions of the city if you do not live there.

Many thanks for your time and help!

Mossman :)

Sheffield, love it cos theres a posh end of town where drinks are pricey but the crowd is cool. hate it cos driving it is scary and the rough parts are even more scary.

Sheffield is a large city that has a large town's outlook. On the one hand this means that it is far less cosmopolitan than Leeds and Manchester, but its a damned sight safer and a nicer place to live as a result.

Also the home of Gatecrasher.

I actually feel safer in London!!! TBH I couldn't wait to finish working in Sheffield.

Milamber 10 December 2006 09:15 PM

Grateful for the Human League and Heaven 17, thats about it..

GC8 10 December 2006 09:17 PM

What about Pulp and Richard Hawley?

With regards to being safer in London; you must be fücking joking?

Simon C 10 December 2006 09:20 PM

Nope GC8, deadly serious. I am quite happy to walk around London at night with my camera gear. Infact I do with regularity, and with the gear showing too.

GC8 10 December 2006 09:24 PM

Simon, that Sheffied is the safest city in which to live is a matter of record. Were you overtly Southern; drinking a shandy or something....?

Simon :)

Hardly drink. I don't know why, just didn't feel safe in Sheffield. Do feel safe in London.

Mossman 10 December 2006 09:58 PM

Thanks for the all the feedback so far - much appreciated.

Rocky's nightclub. Went in 1990 with a ex girlfriend and her lezzy aunt.
Didn't realise it was a gay club until I saw the doormen.
Very Blue Oyster! Stayed clinging to the ex all night!

Meadow Hall

Flaps 11 December 2006 07:34 AM

When I first went there I wasn't keen, but it's growing on me. There's lots of grotty and rough areas but you can find them anywhere. Lots of nice places too!

Can't beat Sheffield for things to do, there's shopping, Centretainment, the Hallam Fm Arena, Ice Sheffield, Ponds Forge, Don Valley, etc....

Plenty of nice bars in the town center and on Ecalsall Road.

Meadowhall's quite good (the wife spends enough of her time there anyway).

If you're into sport they have an ice hockey side, rugby league team, two footbal teams (United and Wednesday)...

Main positive though is how friendly the locals are (I married one!).

Mossman 11 December 2006 06:37 PM

Thanks again everyone :) :)

My hometown :) Fishcake butty wi' scraps, the mighty Wednesday, locking your doors driving through the Manor, sharking down Eccleshall Road, sticky carpet in The Roxy (did someone else say that!), real ale in the Fat Cat, nice parks in the summer, cheap buses (when I lived there anyway).

Hills, roadworks, rough, dirty, steelworks, Def Leppard, Meadowhall.

Missus went there to uni and I thought it was nice on the outskirts near the country, bit of a dive in the town centre.
