What HD TV??
 

Possibly looking for a new HD TV (mainly for the 360 :norty: ) which is the current fave (if any)?? Want 42" and be less than a grand if poss....Not sure weather Plasma or LCD.

Any thoughts?

Do a search for discount codes for Curry's - recently got the 37" Toshiba LCD for £869. Saw it advertised in Comet for £999 with a DVD recorder the other day too.

37WLT66 - and yes, I got it for the 360... :D

Cheers mate but really want a 42". Have 42" at the mo and think I'd miss the 5 inches..... Will have a look for codes though :thumb:

I have a 42" Panasonic plasma and the picture quality is fantastic.

TV is £899 from Digital Direct, £1100 if you want the 3 shelf glass cabinet.

Picture quality is excellent with Sky and amazing on the 360. :)

Also bear in mind that anything above 37" then you're better off with a plasma. I use to own the Toshiba 42WLT58 LCD and the picture was terrible.

Why is it that plasma's seem to display 1024x720 whereas LCD's 1366x768?

I wouldn't discount LCD's too quickly. Plasma did used to be the better choice, but the latest LCD's are at the point where they're actually displaying superior picture quality.
Extreme viewing angles are plasma's only niche these days, and even that is in jeopardy. Not to mention the fact that plasma TV's are much heavier, and prone to burn in.
Check out any review of the new Sony bravia screens, especially the £1500-£2000 40" KDL-40W2000U

The picture on my 42" Tosh LCD was absolute sh1t in comparison to the 42" Panny plasma using the same source. Also the quality of the blacks on the LCD was terrible. Fair enough the black levels on plasma are not fantastic as the pixel has to always remain on to avoid latency and therefore it's more of a grey, but in comparison to the LCD it's way better. (That's my personal opinion though :))

I wouldn't worry too much anyway because the first SED set will be released 4th quarter 2007 by Toshiba and that will blow all Plasma and LCD screens out of the water. You'll get CRT HD quality on a flat screen.

I think you'll find that modern plasmas are hardly ever prone to burn in (unless you buy cheap sh1t), also I've personally lifted the 42 Tosh and it's heavier than the 42 Panny.

And Sony are still way behind Pioneer, Panasonic and Toshiba for tv's. :)

Dave, just bought 26" and 32" version of these. Initial impressions are good, although not had much time to play.

Two observations.

If your planning to mount very close to a wall, you will need spacers if using one of the slim mounts, mains plug is in way :rolleyes:

Secondly, you can only switch off into standby, which means you have to switch off via the plug, there is no ON/OFF switch on the set.

Hi Allan, thanks for the heads up. Not going on the wall but needing to switch off at the main would be quite a pain due to the placement of the plugs...

Modern appliances take the piss sometimes. The government are going crazy about using less energy, but don't force manufacturers to put a decent 'Off' button on things like TV's, DVD players, and digital receivers. I have a samsung LCD that uses almost as much energy when it's in standby as when it's on.

Oh, and Hanley. Perhaps you should check out WhatHiFi?'s recent group test on 40" HDTV's. There's a particular screen that kicked the asses of all it's competition. Tosh and Panny alike. Take a guess at it's type, manufacturer, and model number;)

I'm not saying it's not a good tv, but it's double his budget!!!

I have the Samsung 40" Lcd Tv and Im very impressed with it and well pleased I got it worth every penny.

But you need to watch out as alot of places sell the older models for the same price as the new one for instance the Ebuyer link at the top that is 2 models old.

But defo worth a look and they have come down in price again

Not according to a recent independant test on the continent.

They took 3 groups of people, one who knew nowt about TV's, one who knew a little, and one who were aware of the LCD/Plasma "thing".

Each group had wide age range.

They were taken into a demo centre and back to back demo'd plasma's and LCD's that had brands/models/type covered.

Plasma came out top. LCD still has a bit of work to do ;)
