Anyone been to the Blue Lagoon?

No- not the Blue Oyster!!!! :lol1:

The huge geothermal spa resort in Iceland!

Thinking of going over Xmas for a couple of days, anyone care to share any experiences, tips, ideas on where to get a good deal?

All the best,

Fantastic, been twice but not since they did up the buildings.

My thoughts from an old web page:

Great place! Very surreal, nice and chilled. It can be freezing outside but lovely bubbly in the lagoon. I had a funny experience whereby I had a bet with a group of Japanese who could go furthest into one of the hot spots (really hot!). Nice and clean, and a good visit. The capital offers better overall attractions though if you get my gist ;)

Where did everyone stay, is it easy to get to the lagoon etc?

Stayed in Reykjavik, loads of transport to the lagoon.
Some operators do it as a stop off on the way to the airport if you've got an afternoon or evening flight out.

Very little around the place itself when I was there, as said by RussBoy, much more going on in the city.

(I went with two different women and both times, they must have been the ugliest women in the country, it's definitely a munter free zone.)

Blue lagoon is good but it's a couple of hours and then move on basically.

It's halfway bewtween Keflavik (where the airport is) and Reykjavik. It's just north of the airport road on the way into town (40 mins between the two).

Don't try to stay at Keflavik as it's dead, plus its a US naval base and so is full of clowns. I recommend the Hotel Borg in the centre of Reykjavik as it's right next to some of the main hot spots which are walking distance over the nearby 3 or 4 streets. Big nights out are Thursday and Friday night. Almost no one goes out before midnight, but they also don't go to bed... the whole place is ferkin expensive though. Other good things to do - go and see the Golden triangle (a scenic area, not a porn bar) and jeep snow driving on the local smoking volcano. There is also a ski resort about an hour NE of Rekjavik that has day and night skiing - all kit can be hired there.

other useful information - the only Nasdaq listed Icelandic company is a genetics company and one of their interesting recent discoveries was that icelandic women are genetically speaking 85% irish and 15% scandinavian, and the blokes are primarily Vikings. So imagine a place where all the blokes look like vikings, but are pretty mellow, and all the women are a cross between the best looking irish women that the vikings could make off with and the none too shabby scandinavian stereotype (except for Bjork of course...) so they are all pretty stunning and drink like trawlermen...

Hotel Borg is one of the most expensive :) SAS 1919 is literally around the corner, and slightly cheaper. I recommend the restaurant underneath, the lamb is amazing.

The Blue Lagoon is well worth a visit, it's actually south of Keflavik rather than in between, about an hour from Reykjavik, 15 minutes from Keflavik airport, however the bottom is full of plasters, condoms, and other not so nice things so stay away from the edges of the pool!

It's quite mad how the temperature changes in the pool, you'll see empty space
where it's just a bit too hot. Stand under the artificial waterfall, it's like getting a massage :)

It's ok in the crowded parts, but really, stay away from the edges :)

I wouldn't worry about it, the silica mud will do your skin more good than any debris will do harm :)

Iceland is bloody excellent and well worth the trip. Not as expensive as people make out, but then I'm used to spending lots of time in Scandinavia so my view is skewed. The nightlife is amazing, especially Friday and Saturday night, the people friendly, lots of cool looking 4x4s with huge balloon tyres, the weather changes every 15 minutes and the scenery is nothing short of awesome. I've been twice this year :)
