Audi S8 - experiences?
 

Anyone had any ownership experiences of Audi S8's?

If so, please share - good & bad.

Depends on the age/ model, I have an older one which i love. It has great ground covering ability and fantastic traction. It does cost a little to run fuel/service etc. but thats not news to you, the hidden costs can be in suspension bushes (loads of them) are expensive to replace.
Avoid a damaged car at all costs the front is made from a honeycomb setup and will deform in a slow speed accident these are never replaced properly as it would be uneconomic on even an expensive car.

The newest model has easily the best quality interior over any MB or BMW. It has them also pipped in driving dynamics.

All I know about the older ones is that they are rock solid reliability wise.

My father-in-law loves his. (last of the old shape ones).

It would be the old shape - Final Edition - ones i'm interested in. Looking to spend about 17 or maybe 18K.

Got an 03-plate WRX @ the moment - are running costs, fuel etc on par with a scoob or, as i suspect, is the S8 more expensive to run?

Total costs are hard to compare as my car is older and done more miles, but in terms of fuel it averages around 19mpg and service costs are around £400 per year(AVE). only needed some bushes and a few tyres/brake pads during my ownership.
The biggest cost on an S8 is depreciation, if spending £18k on one its already lost £40k (ish) for someone and will continue to drop but so will an 03 WRX tho:(

My F-I-L gets typcially 19mpg too, but he doesn't do huge long distance journeys which would bring the average up. He's toying with the idea of selling it and getting a Q7 (I think he's being silly) as its only done 40,000 miles.

Not owned one myself however a good friend of mine had one until last year 'R' plate I believe. It was pretty reliable until about a two years before he finally traded it in for a new A4.

First problem he noticed was the gearbox, it started jumping up and down the box at odd times, then intermittantly banging into gear changes at full throttle. He took it too audi who said it needed an new box, I can't recall the price but it was frightning. He took it to an auto specialist instead who replaced hmm selector box or something and changed the oil. It started behaving for a while.

More problems started in the last year, air bag lights, coolant leaks, gearbox started to get very bad again, radiator replacement, emissions issues. The immobilisor started to behave erratically causing several tow aways, and this problem never got solved.

He could not sell this car to a private buyer as he knew it needed substantially more work doing than it's resale value. The car was now going anywhere from 2 - 5 error light on the dash while driving. He joked to me that when he went down for the part ex test drive it was having a good day and only 2 were up :D

He got 5k for it in part ex, it looked showroom on the outside and had Full Audi S/H.

Pity the poor bugger who landed it :nono: I think it had done about 130,000.

On the good side we had some fun in it, I had a E39 M5 at the time it was interesting :thumb:
