Some good background info on the various models etc here Subaru Impreza FAQ
and here Impreza WRX Online Catalog - Contents

As to what to look out for , check for piston slap on pre 1999/2000 models (search on here and you'll find plenty of info on it ), check the obvious like all of the electrics/switches work as they're not cheap if they fail, also paintwork isn't a Scoobies strong point either .A good service history goes without saying , and I'ld suggest driving a few before you buy , I found when I was looking for my first one that some just seem to have more go in them than others .

Enjoy

Hi, I'm still a newbie as well really!!!!

I went for a car owned by someone I knew, so history was complete...

I'd say history is priority, also decide what you want i.e. looks or max BHP....

(This costs loads and highly addictive!)

Look down the ESC forum as a couple of people are selling cars... maybe not the cheapest BUT you get what you pay for!!!

Good luck and welcome

Make sure you take a mechanic that knows scoobys too...especially if, like me, its your first!! I took my mechanic, who works on all Jap sport cars, and as it turned out he knew my car's previous owner's mechanic, which was a result!
If you get one, make sure you get cam belt checked/changed! I did, as didn't have history (well, only japanese, and my japanese isn't that good!), and good job I did too, as it was quite chewed!!

Any probs or queries, just ask one of these guys (and gals!) as they are so helpful!

As for meets, its the Lodge Meet this thursday evening, down at the Lodge pub near South Woodham Ferrers, so come along, and say hi...

Don't Be Shy

Hope to see you there....Oh, and Welcome!!!!

Here, here Wozza!!! Spot on!!! (Not that we're biased!!)

p.s Wozza, was that you I saw in the southend on sea-front area Saturday night? "URD" on number plate (I think?) and a rather burnt rear bumper.....flamer kit by any chance???

as already mentioned, check for piston slap -

make sure the engine is cold and start it, if there's a rattle type noise usually coming from the back right hand side of the engine, and goes after a few moments, it's a usual sign of piston slap.

take the car for a drive, once it's warmed up, give it some welly, the turbo should spool up smoothly, if it judders and seems to hold back, could be a turbo problem, also check for blue smoke from the exhaust.
