Website: Buying laptops for normal people

Is there a website that helps people who know feck all about the internal workings of computers find the right computer for them. The only sites I can find appear to have been designed by geeks for geeks:(

All I know is that I want an laptop that has a big wide screen, a proper keyboard, a decent sized (60Gb+) hard drive, 512Mb of Ram, a DVD player and a slot to stick my internet card in.

Ideally I want an Acer, I've tried their website but it's sh!t, it can only help you find what you want if you already know what you want:confused:

Mods can you leave this thread here for a while to give me a chance of getting some non-geek replies?

PC world? If only to get the spec of machine you're after, then go and buy it from an internet shop....

Dan :)

Personally, I wouldn't puke on an Acer.

Rather Dell. I know they have their enemies, but in 7 years of buying only Dell for our company we've never had an issue.

Not had any issues with the later generation ACERs and they are very good spec for the money. The older ones used to suffer with the connection on the screen hinge.

Conversely, no end of problems with our sales manager's Dell - but I am sure he is part of the problem!

I have a technical friend who says he simply refuses to touch Dell systems because of their lousy customer support. HOWEVER, I have had a Dell system for 6 years now and it's been very good indeed. I think they've improved in the customer service area considerably over the last couple of years.

I've been looking for a laptop recently, too and I have to say that looking at the specs, Dell appear to be significantly ahead of the competition pound for pound.

What you can be assurred of with Dell is that you will get a quality product. They definately know how to build a PC.

I've got my eye on the widescreen XPS series laptop. Not cheap, but good value for the very high spec. The inspiron 9400 has a double memory offer at the moment and -as with all Dell systems- you can customise it to your desired specs!

See above thread, I have just bought the Acer 5044 from Comet for £399. It is a superb machine and I couldn't be happier with it.

Seems to have all you are after.

find it on Comet: Comet's Online Store

BTW I didn't buy laptop I posted about.

5044 seemed far better value.

Buy something designed for people rather than geeks, Apple

SJ_Skyline 13 November 2006 12:15 PM

I wonder if there will be a "Tesco Value" laptop in the near future? :D

We used to have Acer's at work, they weren't very reliable, we have Toshibas now, much better. :thumb:

It being UNIX based means it caters for both :)

My recent experience trying to acquire just a plain old mains charger for my ipod has put me of Apple's attitude to it's customers I'm afraid:( It's the only battery powered item I've ever come across that isn't supplied with a proper means of recharging included:mad: Plus, retailers in this part of the world are not permitted to sell them unless you buy them with an ipod:mad:

BTW I nelected to mention the reason an Acer is preferable is because I'm currently based in Bangkok for the next 12 months or so, and the support available is very good.

PS We had 3 Dell PCs at my at my previous employers, and had no end of trouble with them:( This was when they were going through their 'who needs customer support' phase though.

GUys if you want decent service use a well know reseller. The internet has focussed people so much on price that they have forgotten about the service side and that good service may cost a little extra.

I'd suggest picking up the phone and speaking to a few different reputable companies about your needs and seeing what they have and paying the extra few quid if they give you some good service.

I'd suggest the new MacBook range by Apple myself. YOu can run windows if you must via bootcamp but I doubt you'd want to once you use ther Mac OS.

Yeah Apple are rather odd but you will find thier resellers offer a far superior service.

I would never own a Dell laptop without an active warranty on it. Every one of mine has gone wrong somehow over the years, but they're so cheap I keep buying new ones :)

One slight problem with that approach for me Allan, my grasp of Thai, although improving, isn't what you'd call good;)
