Daily V8's.... Monaro... E39 M5 ...

Monaro.... E39 M5.... couple of choices out there.

Always the one I never got to... (due to funds really :( )

Would love a nice V8 for a while... (to get it our of my system)

I want a nascar V8 ideally...

So who's had a nice V8 runner here then... ?

Monaro (circa 15-20k) seems to tick a fair few boxes - ugly as sin IMO but would do the job with a stainless system :)
E39 M5 - Solid residuals and a 60k at the end of the day for 15k is not bad

TVR - Love the sound but too many bad things heard..

Any other options out there for 15-20k sort of money?

RS Grant 12 November 2006 08:10 PM

Never heard/driven one, but what about an Audi S6, got a 4.2 V8 and I'd assume with an exhaust upgrade it would sound nice too... :)

Cheers,
Grant

My next brumbrum will probably be a V8 - but due to family constraints, it will need to be an estate - so probably a later S4 Avant.

DAn :)

ScoobySnack 12 November 2006 10:15 PM

Got two at the moment, twin turbo RS6 4.2 V8 and E39 M5.

The M5 has a H&S exhaust being made as we speak for that full Nascar effect.

BMW 740 has a 4.4 V8 and can be had for 6k. Also Lexus soarer comes with a V8 and is the fastest best handling car on the road ever. ;)

RichB 13 November 2006 08:56 AM

I can personally vouch for this car if you want some sensible and expensive mods! Although you are in the grim north whereas this is in the sunny south ;)

BMW : E39 M5

Not that quick, but I bet it makes a nice noise ;)

Alternatively, what about a Passat W8 4motion? Different.....

Ooh that's nice. I do like the black/black combo.

I tried one before I bought the Monaro, was very dissappointed, Monaro on the other hand was superb, and now they have the 500bhp kit available it would walk over any of the other contenders mentioned here. I had mine up to 410bhp and it sounded fantastic, would have supercharged it but a baby came along and 2 doors was not enough, the bolt on goodies are very cheap for the Monaro V8's

Edcase 13 November 2006 10:52 AM

The E39 M5 is definitely my car of the moment. It's handling and poise defy its size and weight.

VXRBOY 13 November 2006 11:27 AM

Theres a red Monaro VXR for sale on autotrader website, 20k.

My uncle has one, he has put different exhaust on and it now sounds amazing, like a Spitfire, not ballistically quick but reasonably fast, buy one for 12 grand, add a supercharger kit for another 4 and you have a 400 bhp machine for 16 grand.

Edcase 13 November 2006 01:04 PM

But with no handling to speak of.

You can get a fully specced E39 M5 with BMW warranty now for £16k.

NotoriousREV 13 November 2006 01:14 PM

I'm another one considering the ZT V8. For the money (£10k) I don't think there's much to touch it.

A BMW 540 V8 (4.4) sport, better built, not a Rover, faster, not a Rover, handles better, not a Rover, better brakes, not a Rover, better resale, not a Rover, dont have to explain "its a V8" all the time, and mostly ITS NOT A ROVER.

Some of us actually prefer not to go for the most obvious or 'sensible' choice. Sometimes blows up in our faces, but hey, it's the price you pay for not following the crowd ;)

Another big :thumb: for the E39 M5. I love mine and it's certainly the best and most satisfying car I've ever owned. Not as much raw fun as the old WRX but far better day to day.

More economical too. And a way better dealer network/attitude...

I would agree with you totally, the sensible choice is not always best.
I was just replying to the "not much to touch it comment",

Personally I would not have any of them.;)

This is exactly my thoughts... 4 doors (family man wife buy-in..) quick, solid residuals (still?) RWD for some rear end malarky (without child & wife in car.. :thumb:)

60k car for that kind of money.... pretty good...

Is there a particular spec 'to go for' to get the best bang for buck?

Thanks

Ed,

does yours sound that good on full throttle with a standard exhaust?

Edcase 18 November 2006 09:45 PM

Absolutely not, no. My RS6 sounds pretty good as standard, I left the car totally untouched, but the M5 is surprisingly muted given the incredible engine.

All that will change on dec 4th!!! :thumb:

I'm actually just considering also adding 100cell race cats, headers and a remap as there is a group buy on at the mo, but as I do a number of long trips to the alps, scotland etc. just worried about the boomyness. Hmmm...

Yes, make sure you get the comms pack, it was a 3k-odd option and sought after if you want the best residuals.

Avoid wood trim.

Try and get a 2001 model with the facelift angel eye headlights and celis rear LED lights.

Ideally you want the widescreen monitor / sat nav.

All of that will move you from the 15k mark without, up closer to 20k with.

Also you cannot renew warranty once lapsed, so try to find one with a few months left.

madisonmonkey 18 November 2006 10:10 PM

When are you going to put some pics up Ed? And I need to hear the new exhaust :norty:
