welding tips anyone??

does anyone know of any good info, tips or links etc for mma welding? got a portable inverter but really struggling with vertically laid welds, do you go top to bottom or bottom to top? is it best to have positive connected to stick or to workpiece? using 2.5mm rods on 6mm plate steel.
thanks for any help

Vertical up is a good strong weld with an Arc welder, not the prettiest of welds but does the job very well.Depending on application i.e if metal has a V cut into it or is placed at angles a single fillet weld is o.k,but if you weave(difficult to explain on here without diagram) in a triangular motion as you go up the metal this will be a very strong weld. You will need the amps higher than you would when doing horizontal welding.Vertical down is o.k but from memory the amps need to be slighty less than normal welding.
3.2mm rods maybe easier depending on gap you are trying to bridge.
Hope this helps
