What diesel estate for £19k

My dad is looking to replace his classic 2000 wagon (turbo) with another estate.

He has test driven a Jag x-type 2.2 Sport Diesel

I think a better buy would be an Audi A4 2.0 TDI S-Line Avant

My question is, what others marques are out there that you beilieve to be as good if not better?

What would you spend £19k on?????? :norty: It's got to be a diesel estate.

Pics would help :thumb:

Thanks

Does he need cruise control?

Sub97 25 October 2006 01:26 PM

Surely a 330D Tourer is on the list too?

What about the new shape Passatt diesel?

Honda accord CDTI?

lordharding 25 October 2006 01:36 PM

A main contendor has to be the Octavia VRS estate that has just came out in diesel form within the 19k budget

you will get a lot more for your money the naudi /VW as thay all use the same bits

fantastic car unless its the old <skoda> badge snobbery ? :Dthat would put you off

VTEC to Turbo 25 October 2006 01:51 PM

Skoda :wonder: No offence but I just don't like the styling of them, even if it were to have a different badge!

He likes to be different, hence the Scoob, but that is a step to far ;)

A lot of car for the money though.

Thanks for all your comments/sugestions :thumb:

I've passed them on and it has made no difference :lol1: he has his heart set on an x-type (He's always loved Jag's).

Now all I have to do is persuade him to go for the Sport Premium model (carbon dash etc)

Thanks again. :thumb:

YOU don't like the styling of them?????

Thought it was your dad buying the car?? :wonder:

I came on to suggest the Skoda too, but I see someone else has already made that very sensible suggestion.
Badge snobbery is a funny thing isn't it.......shallow minded fools I say!! Top spec VAG group car for the price of a lower spec......erm...VAG group car!!

Saying that, the X-Type is a very nice motor (even if it is a Mondeo in an Armani suit) and the diesel drives very nicely. Plenty of torque.........I think it has overboost too doesn't it??
It is also one of those motors that the estate looks far better (IMO) than the saloon.........a bit like a Scoob *flame suit on*! :hjtwofing

Oh yeah.......what do I drive?.......Skoda.....what did I drive......Scoob wagon!! LOL

The irony!

He's going to take a big drop in performance from a turbo to a 2.2 Diesel, unless someone does good tuning boxes for them. Does he need the 4wd? If not, 330D is constantly raved about - see if you can get him in one for 30 mins, "just to cross it off the list".

The Diesel X Type is only 2wd
I had one for a while and have to say they are not a patch on a Merc.
Jaguars are horrible cars ....... Unless its the XJ

lordharding 26 October 2006 06:00 PM

He will get a hugh shock with Jaguar serving bills too .

might as well go for a mondeo estate for sensible money

Accord is a very good car

VTEC to Turbo 02 November 2006 10:12 AM

Nothing to do with badge snobbery, he doesn't like the styling of Mercs either!

The x-type has a better engine than the mondeo albeit having the same lump! (Injectors, engine stabilsers, NVH etc are all better in the x-type, I've spoken to collegues in the diesel engine development department at work for an informed opinion).

He knows there is going to be a fair performance drop, but he doesn't find the Scoob that fast any more, anyway. It's a practical car with comfort that he is after.

Thanks for all the comments :notworthy
