What would you do with £8000

I have £8000. For the moment I have everything I need, and thus this cash is floating around. I really want to invest it or similar. Other than savings accounts or premium bonds, what would you do with the cash short term [or long term depending on the rewards?].

Any advice or guidance appreciated. :)

davegtt 18 October 2006 11:15 AM

piss it up the wall?

TopBanana 18 October 2006 11:16 AM

Stick £7000 in an ISA of some sort.

SJ_Skyline 18 October 2006 11:17 AM

Galloise in the 15:30 at Nottingham ;)

Andy M3 18 October 2006 11:18 AM

All good suggestions :D

Tidgy 18 October 2006 11:38 AM

think the isa is the best bet to get a reasonable return, nmaybe put 6k in it and have 2k for a cracking holiday

RMA26 18 October 2006 11:40 AM

Look at guaranteed interest bonds

or high interest rated accounts

Lord Shrek 18 October 2006 11:41 AM

hit the casino and as wesley snipes said 'always bet on black'

i hit the red three times in a row with 500 a go and walked out potless

Lord Shrek....if you want to wait 10 years for your ISA to make you 50 pound profit go ahead andym3 branson :thumb:

Gymbal 18 October 2006 11:53 AM

Fill up M3?

Serious suggestion: assuming you still have a mortgage, can you pay it in? depending on annual interest etc when the best timing etc is.

Leslie 18 October 2006 11:55 AM

You can say that again! About M3's I mean.

Les :)

Andy M3 18 October 2006 12:02 PM

I no longer have the M3. But the 850 T5 I run is a little worse on fuel :Whatever_

I don't really need to worry about the mortgage ;)

Best idea thus far seems the casino :thumb: :D

Buy an Elise and run it for a while.

falkster 18 October 2006 12:30 PM

Stick it in a high interest account!!

Dunk 18 October 2006 12:38 PM

Bought a lock up garage about 5 years ago for less than you can put in an ISA, returns 20% pa tax free (to my son), and has therefore has paid for itself. It's increased in value & holds a small potential for a windfall if the block gets demolished & a planning app goes in.
And if I can't let it, I'll use it to stash another toy ;)

I can't believe no one has made the ubiquitous 'cocaine and hookers' comment yet ! :D

lightning101 18 October 2006 12:42 PM

You can get an 04 Evo FQ320 for that on EBAY ;)

And waste whatever is left :D

J4CKO 18 October 2006 12:52 PM

Keep it for when you may need it.

I have done this, been flush, bought daft stuff and then regretted it later when I was skint, its amazing how a grands worth of hifi speakers seems like a good idea when you are wedged but complete folly when you aren't, plus like most stuff bought just cos you have the money its worth arse all when you come to sell it because you are skint.

I would say treat yourself to a grands worth of random stuff you fancy, perhaps a holiday if you want to spend a bit moreand that will satisfy the burning a hole in your pocket sensation, put the rest away in a 3 month account with decent interest.

Ever thought of making a charitable donation if you have spare money hanging around ? rather than blowing it of stuff you dont need.

Do you have, or plan to have kids, if so, put it away for them, first car, education, house deposit etc

The davegtt charity is in desperate need of funding if your thinking of donating ;) :D

SJ_Skyline 18 October 2006 12:56 PM

Is that the same as davegtt's big drinks fund? ;)

SJ_Skyline 18 October 2006 12:57 PM

Send me a cheque for "Charitable Aid for Sj's Homeless" If you can't fit that all on the top line then the initials CASH will do ;)

davegtt 18 October 2006 12:58 PM

Possibly, but Im not going to admit to that now am I :D

J4CKO 18 October 2006 01:00 PM

Dave, I thought that was for the op ?
