LPG CONVERSION
 

I am thinking of getting my 2001 wrx coverted to take LPG. I travel about 20k miles a year and believe the fuel saving could be considerable. Also have been told I could experience an increase in bhp when running lpg- is this true?

Any thoughts ?

I looked into this last month i was advised by a respected company not to do it you will loss bhp and of all the cars the impreza is the one that does not run very well on gas could be expensive in the long run if you look at my previous posts the info is their :thumb:

Why not, Plenty running it out here in Germany. Also with dual map Ecutek. WRX wagon running 265PS. I have pictures and details of the fit.
There is a switch on the dash to flick between fuel types. So you could take it easy on LPG if your that concerend. Flick it back when you want to give it some beans.

I had an LPG granada and that ran fine, i could flick between fuels and it ran great. The scoob is a little more complicated though, so not sure how succesful it would be. If you do do it, makesur eyou go to a well respected place that fits top quality kits, there are lot o cheap kits out there that just don't do the job on the modern cars. I'd expect it to cost between £1500-2000 for a top nothch installation.

The savings could be huge, if you hunt around for LPG the prices differ massively!! I was paying 32p litre at on place, and 50p litre if i got caught out on the motorway or a BP garage. The cheap suppliers are usually places that ar only open in normal working hours and saturday mornings.

I looked into this ages ago and like above got no where. Got a install costed and it was around£2k. As for having a laugh part! I've been to three rally schools driving grpN subarus and a escort cossie and the funny thing is all the rally cars where converted to LPG!!!! That must be funny! Not!!!!

forgot to mention, in Germany at least the LPG is equivalent to 110 RON. Beggars belief as to why more people haven't used it. I'm thinking because it's still relatively unknown over in the UK

gas is for cooking with not for powering cars

I converted a wrx bug eye to lpg , was doing 220 miles for £12 of gas ! excellent for normal day to day running , when power went passed 160 bhp the system would switch back to petrol by itself . I had an omvl system which had an additional ecu which was fully adjustable . Paid for itself in a year . Well worth it .:)

Sounds good- where did you have the kit fitted and how much did it set you back ?

HI lpg is fine on low boost car or if you are going to give it some stick turn back to petrol brc kit runs 1 bar out the injectors so its the best kit to go for have fitted others but found the brc kit to be the best can b maped too about £2/£2.5 k fitted

My turbo wagon has been running on LPG for 65.000 km... The savings are huge in Belgium were the liter of LPG costs 40 eurocents versus 1.30 euro / l of 98RON....

LPG does indeed have a 110RON, which is great regarding detonation.

However, the problem with LPG is it's dryness. When running on petrol, the valves are being lubricated. Not on LPG. Unless you have an extra device fitted which will mix graphite to LPG to lubricate the valves. However, it'll only work when the intake manifold is sucking air, hence, when your relative pressure gauge is reading below zero.

The other problem is that the engine runs hotter on LPG, so if you push it hard, your engine is going to suffer more than on petrol.

Basically, I run the car on LPG when driving cool (which is 90% of the time at least) and switch back to petrol to give it some stick!

And it has been working for 65.000km with no problems!

I have estimated the savings to 10.000 euros (installation price included) over 150.000 km. That's the price I paid the car !

Kit was about £900 inc vat (TRADE) from fes autogas and it was an omvl dream 21n kit and an oil injection kit for the valves to prevent valve seat resession. Fitted it myself as i work in a main dealership and then took for lpga safety check , passed first time ! The install was also checked over by a training guy from omvl who spent a day with us setting it up on a laptop down the motorway . It would stay on gas up to 5500 rpm in 4th at hard acceleration then switch to petrol , when you eased off it went back to gas .
There was a noticable drop in power on gas but still about the 180bhp mark i feel . But if you want a play just push the switch and it's straight back onto petrol in the blink of an eye . Only negative i found was that i used this car alot more due to it being almost as cheap to run as a little peugeot 106 diesel so the mileage was going up quickly , so sold it before mileage went over 100k and bought low mileage sti ppp and a little runabout .
