anyone built a recovery bed before? after advice

hi ppl just bought a 1998 lt35 lwb as you can see in the pics, we have good mechanical knowledge and all the tools needed so ive decided to build a budget bed

am i wrong in thinking i could lop of the top etc to turn into a flat bed then concentrate on building the beavertail, ie keep the excisting bed, not sure weather to raise the cab end of the bed 8 inches or so? im not sure as they seem to have a low chassis so might not bother

ok any advice really appreciated, i know the best way is to start fresh and build a frame etc but at the mo i dont want to go that far, surely the excisting bed should be strong enough?

why would you want to sleep off a hangover in that salty old shed?

i take it your going to recovering just cars/small vans with this when its done.first thing is the bed steel or alloy( you really wont 5/6mm steel checker plate).and what sort of subframe is the bed sitting.

i dont pick up the van till mid next week

im kinda presuming the beds strong enough already? although i was planning on covering it with steel / ally plating

Doesn't seem a very comfortable proposition.

Are you sure you wont need a recovery truck to recover your "new" recovery truck?

most of the van beds i've seen/built have some sort of ladder subframe with channel running over the van chassis beams covered with checker plate steel/alloy depending on the max weight your van can take

fook all for a commercial m8, the one i was using clocked up 750,000 kilometers

most of the big trucks can clock up a million+ easy

were not talking about a big truck we are talking about a VW lt!

Sprinter maybe, but LT mk1

If your covering those sort of miles, why dont you just buy a new one?

Miles cheaper in the longrun and better for the company image!

apples24 16 October 2006 07:32 PM

i dont clock up those miles,

i thought the lt's make good trucks, sure the older pre 95 shape were cack but these ones quite nice to drive etc
