Just to dig this thread back out again :)

I myself am now seriously thinking of increasing capacity and although I have read through this and other 2.33/2.5 threads on here and 22b I am still wondering which is the best option for me ?

Unlike many of you I am purely using my car as a 'fun' track/drag car. Currently cars basic spec - STI4 RA with a 2.0 CDB using the phase 1 crank + proper bearings, rods, pistons etc built by Paul B. Just moved to a 321T and it's running nicely in to the 400's.

I really feel the next stage is to go 2.33 or 2.5 to get my goal of the 500+ region. I suppose everyone wants to keep costs down but what would be most economical as I have a CDB in the car already, reliner ? buy a 2.5 and build that etc ?

Assuming RA gearing then 2.33 is the sensible choice, as it likes to rev.

2.5 is not so keen to rev-on and with an RA final drive you may just find that top speed is quite a bit lower than now.

I will have to sort gearbox also, so PPG and a longer 5th is the way to go I assume.

Depending upon your anticipated power, try to stay with the helical PPG which is actually quite quiet. BUT, if you go for serious power you'll need the straight cut set and a pair of ear plugs:eek: . The noise is an acquired taste. there is a thread on here with the sound that it makes. BUT I'd recommend getting a ride in an actual car.

Or you could go straight cut 1st /2nd & helical 3rd 4th which is available and quite a good compromise, as you don't spend enough time in the first 2 for it to really aggravate you.

Dog engagement is definitely not for road use.

You can then use whatever 5th gear you wish for out about 3 combinations to select one that will achieve wahtever you need for top speed.

6 speed is an option of course.

Call if you want a chat.
