whats the safest way to pay some one from e-bay withought a pay pal account?

Hi all. Just purchased an ecu from e-bay today but the seller has no pay pal account and only has a score rating of 3 as he is new to selling on there. He does though have a 100% record so far. Is there any safe way to purchase this and have some come back if it goes tots up? Not that I am saying he is dodgy or anything, just me being cautious as usuall.

Put the cash in envelope with appropriate note on front e.g. £55 enclosed for blow-up doll as e-bay reference 1234. Put this envelope into main envelope with your address on back and take to PO. Ask for Next Day Special Delivery. This costs £4.10 for up to 100g and £4.50 for up to 500g. Payment includes insurance for £500 if it goes missing.

Postman Pat should deliver it before 1pm the next day and someone has to sign for it. So there should be no fisticuffs about whether payment received :)

GREEN SCOOBY 10 October 2006 10:33 PM

£140

That's why you insure it......... And that's why I suggested using two envelopes so it's not too obvious. In fact I usually tuck the cash inside a bit of old card so norti postie can't tell.

I think the one risk is when you post to an address where there are lots of people as I am not sure if anyone can sign for receipt or whether it has to be declared recipient (and I doubt if identity is asked for). So someone else couldc sign and make off with the money.

We use online bank transfer here for virtually everything, I have bought shed loads of ebay and only ever use online bank transfer to pay. never once had any problems.

it is common over here to do transactions this way, you are seen as odd if you don't do it.

Even bought stuff off the web from shops and just done an online bank transfer or Überweisung as it is called in German.

sbk1972 11 October 2006 12:25 PM

I regulary do online transfers. Had a slight problem once, when the guy kept telling me he hadnt recieved the funds. There seems to be 3/4 working days inbetween transfering the ££, to the saler recieving them.

Anyway, 5/6 days later, he stil ltold me he hadnt recieved it. So, I rang my bank, Barclays, and started to enquire. It seems that you have to wait 10 days ,but then they can trace where the funds went and recall them back.

So, I wrote to the guy, saying that I cant understand why he hasnt recieved the funds, but dont worry, Barclays can re-call the funds, so I wont loose out.

Sunddenly, the money was there in his account.

So, two things, one, there are iffy guys out there, but two, you can after a period of time, trace and recall the transaction (barclays anyway).

Shouldnt you have thought about this before bidding on it? I'd be slightly pi55ed off if I sold something to someone and they knew they were going to struggle to find a way of paying me.

Woh hold on here its not me that has the problem with paying. The seller told me he had no pay pal account after I purchased the goods. Maybe try reading the first part of the thread

hutton_d 11 October 2006 03:35 PM

Why not just send him a cheque? ..... I have for various things and all has been fine so far. Similarly when I sold things before I had a paypal account ....

Dave

davegtt 11 October 2006 03:37 PM

Nowhere did it say in your first post you didnt know about him not having a paypal account til afterwards, usually if the seller doesnt have a paypal account it says so on the auction.

GREEN SCOOBY 11 October 2006 03:47 PM

all that I am doing here is asking people for advice which has been good so far as I have never used the post office to send money or use postal orders etc. Just covering my back.
