fook me, once nse wheel touched the ground and speed had dropped he would have no control over direction except brakes, amazing job, wonder how long runway was down for while they resurfaced it? lol

That was LAX, earlier this year.

Its the designers of the front wheel that caused the problems! Not the first time an Airbus' nose wheel has rotated through 90 degrees.

Stunning bit of flying though, all credit to the crew. :notworthy

Surely any pilot rated on a aircraft of that size would be able to perform a similar maneuvre without difficulty? Bloody well hope so.

Still think anybody that is a Design Engineer deserves a medal :D

My brother in law did a similar thing in a brand new F15E at Lakenheath only hit manged to flip the plane and write it off. Still both him and the wizzo walked away from it.

Leslie 11 October 2006 12:10 PM

He did well. He was lucky there was no discernible lock on the nose wheel to try to steer the aircraft off the runway. Its not too difficult to keep it straight with differential braking, I have had a similar problem myself in the past.

He was very sensible to use the whole runway to stop the aircraft rather than try for an emergency stop. It would have been a very different problem if the nosewheel had seized with residual steering lock on.

SirFozzalot 11 October 2006 04:41 PM

Nice bit of pilot skill! :thumb:

Impressive to see the amount of side loading the front wheel/strut can take.

Leslie 12 October 2006 11:49 AM

You are quite right Astraboy, thats why it did not try to steer him off the runway.
