Hmmm, for the first time I've thought that maybe I might be able to stomach owning one of these. It brings to mind the new WRC a lot more than the 215bhp model.

Bajie 01 November 2000 12:11 AM

Leather?
Does it come with leather???

RB170 01 November 2000 12:17 AM

Still don't like it.....I saw the UK model at the show and this is an improvement but I can't see myself going from an RB5 to Daewoo

Puff The Magic Wagon! 01 November 2000 12:31 AM

I like the spec of the STi.....and it actually does look better........i don't think i could wait 2 years for a UK STi...so i might go the import route....wonder who will be first to get one imported here????

Bash...

The following has been taken from this weeks copy of autoexpress:

The new Impreza WRX too tame for you? This is the car the real performance junkies http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif have been waiting for - the 280bhp version tweaked by the companys tuning division STI.

As with previous versions of the STI, which became a favorite with grey importers, the new model is based on the standard WRX, but has styling, engine, suspension and gearbox modifications. All of which promise to make it one of the fastest accelerating Subaru's ever, with a 0 - 60 time of less than 4.5 secs http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif - putting it head to head with the Mitsubishi Evo VI.

Unlike the old STi though, there are plans to officialy import the new car to Europe - but we will have to wait as the companys engineers are struggling to get the powerful engine through tough exhaust emissions regs.

Hiroya Okumo, Subarus engine design manager, promised his development team was working hard to make the 280bhp unit Euro compliant. But he has warned that it was still 18 months away http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif.

Differences to the WRX unit for the japenese market include a bigger turbo and intercooler raising the power from 215bhp and boosting torque from 292Nm to 373nm. The new engine is mated to a special six-speed close ratio gearbox and limited slip diff. Suspension tweaks can be specified by the customer to include bigger wheels, lower springs, bigger brembo brakes and strut braces to stiffen the bodyshell and prevent flex.

There is also a whole raft of STi branded styling additions, the most popular likely to be the more attractive and effective Xenon gas discharge headlamps.

Phew

If there is enough intrest I will scan the pics and post them under this thread.

They need fatter wheels & tyres to fill those arches out - there's too much overhang making it look a little soft.

AWD 01 November 2000 01:57 PM

There's not much clearance at the front is there?

Diablo 01 November 2000 02:11 PM

Front lip, lights and lamp covers make a big difference, though.

Is the bonnet contour different as well?

Almost like it......

Justin 01 November 2000 02:44 PM

My Japanese aint too hot, but there's some rather tasty pictures of the new STi range on the official Subaru Japan site:

SWOLL 01 November 2000 04:23 PM

That rear wing is bloody awful

I still can't the stand gold wheels either

paulmon 01 November 2000 04:28 PM

It looks like it's been pinched of a Skyline.

healeyb 01 November 2000 04:29 PM

Is this an optional ultra ground hugging front spoiler? If so, it's not optional in my book! On the lineup page on the STi site you can view the car in silver, black, white & blue - the blue looks massively better IMO. In fact I'll take the wheels and the wing also.

AllanB 01 November 2000 07:28 PM

Mmm... nice. Start saving those pennies now for 2002 !

AllanB

stratman 01 November 2000 07:36 PM

Sorry but it still looks SH*TE!

SCOTTY 01 November 2000 07:49 PM

Wider wheels different spoiler... Mmmm.. Maybe.
It's certainly nicer than the UK one.

Scotty.

Justin 01 November 2000 08:55 PM

Stratman,

Don't fight it, you know you want one really! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

DrEvil 02 November 2000 12:37 AM

I thought Tamiya had cornered the market on toy cars!? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Airmiles 02 November 2000 12:47 AM

5-door STi arriving about the time I'll want to trade in? Oh well, can't take it with you.... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

AWD 02 November 2000 08:37 AM

It's definitely a lot more impressive than the normal MY01 - but IMO that's not very difficult.

I'm still not sre if I would get one, but then again if it drives well, I probably wouldn't care too much.

Craig H 02 November 2000 09:43 AM

Looks like the bonnet is slightly different. Bigger scoop too?

AWD 02 November 2000 10:49 AM

That could be to make up for the lack of the 2 suppelementary intakes on the MY01.

Scott J Davies 02 November 2000 11:06 AM

Well I'm prepared to eat my own words and say it is starting to look the nuts.

With a nice carbon bonnet conversion that some clever tuner may come up with http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif it will look even better.

Bernmc2 02 November 2000 05:10 PM

Actually, these are pics of the new Subaru Corolla. Free set of dentures with every car. (Prescription glasses were considered, but being able to see the car clearly was not considered A Good Thing).

Hi All

I don't know why I didn't spot this earlier, and for that I apologise, but....

Copying and pasting articles from other publications is illegal.

I have spoken with Autoexpress and they are happy for THIS article to stay on this occasion as they can see that it is of interest to us, but...

Can I ask that we don't do this in future though, and that approval is sought before any copies of other publications are posted on this board?

Best regards

webmaster

PS. Thank you to Autoexpress for being so understanding.

Webmaster

It might be worth posting a separate thread warning about copying and pasting as a lot of users may not read this one.
