Sports Cat - Classic
 

I'm thinking of fitting a sports cat down pipe to my 1999 impreza,

Found two options so far: hayward and scott for approx £550, and scoobyword do one for £300.

Are there any other makes available?

are sports cats a good upgrade idea? any advice welcome :)

They are legal, you'll be insured on your car if you declare it. YOu'll prob get a few extra ponnies. Other than that, I have no idea!

There have been a lot of posts about the Scoobyworld Ninja previously.

Quality kit, I have one on my MY00 Uk Turbo.

Passes MOT on its own, not very restrictive at all - mine made 273bhp/273lbft with standard TD04.

Ns04 has one also and he made 320bhp with diff turbo.

Just one thought:

The Ninja is a 3'' tube necked to 2.5'' where it bolts to the centre section, ok if running to 340 ish bhp.
The H&S can be ordered in 3 to 2.5 or 3 all the way.
The TSL sport cat (similar to Ninja) is another, but the Ninja takes all on cost.

I think MANY decat people will end up with sports cats very soon, and the costs will come down.
For good MoT results I think you need to wrap the cat or preferably the whole down pipe before installing.

Wrapping is where the entire down pipe is wrapped in a fire proof 50mm wide woven tape from the kneck that bolts to the turbo all the way down to the end of the pipe. It certainly covers the sport cat area.
The tape keeps the heat from the exhaust gases in the pipe to keep gas flow fast, BUT it also keeps the cat hot. The cat must be at optimum temperature to pass the MoT.

Most garages will not know about this, but every Scooby independant specialist will.
Whole job would use about £50 of wrapping and about 30 mins to do it. It has to be wired into place to stop it unraveling and handled with care too.

Would a decat downpipe pass a mot if wrapped or is it hit and miss wether it does or not?
And does a sports cat definitely pass?

Sports Cat passes on its own - easily, in my case.

Why worry about it, get a Sports Cat and job done for emissions - none of this 'friendly' MOT station crap.

Why pay so much for a cat in the downpipe, when you can take your exisiting mid-section and weld a hi-flow cat in for much less money and still pass emissions checks?

Or even just bolt your Euro mid-section in come MOT time and make sure the bugger gets nice and warm?

Believe me, putting the restirction further away from the trubo pays dividends!

Yep, a number of people have these now and are getting figures that are very close to what would be expected with full decat. FYI I also have ported and wrapped headers (another very worthwhile investment, particularly if you're moving up to a bigger turbo). My DP is also wrapped :thumb:

How much is a decat DP these days? £180. so £100 more gets you pretty much the same gains, but means a fully road legal car, hence no potential worries about insurance and certainly no worries or hassle whne it comes to MOT time.

A very good piece of kit IMHO.

Do bare in mind Graham's comments if you intend to tune over 350bhp though, as the 2.5 inch diameter will start to become a restriction.

I can tell you that 320 in a classic goes a long way! :norty: :D

Ns04 talks a lot of sense!
Wrapping is used to substitute for the loss of the stock heat shields too. The cat works by 'glowing' at an optimum temperature to convert the impurities in the gasses. For the MoT you will need to get the cat hot, and the wrap helps a lot to get an easy pass. If you fit a 3'' through system you will have probs getting the cat hot enough as the gasses at low revs pass through the whole exhaust system so easily.

Wrapping also helps manage the under bonnet heat flow (especially to the TMIC).

i have been offered a 3inch scoobysports, sports cat down pipe, comes already wrapped.

would it be worth going for?

just a note guys, the police or vsa can stop you at the road side and get you to pass a vehicle saftey check (more stringent than an MOT, so im lead to belive) they have been doing alot around Escrick (A19 between Selby and York) recently, so a sports cat int a bad idea anyway.

They are active in the West Midlands too..
