House Alarm Cost
 

Looking at getting an alarm fit and have a guy coming out to quote on Monday (they are Gold members of the SSID so should be OK).

What ballpark figure would be reasonable for a wireless (or preferably wired if they can do it without making a mess of the walls). i.e. what's everyone paying.

I am looking for a non-monitored system but want the following:-

3 bed detached house

Extra loud alarm :)
Vibration sensors on downstairs doors/windows
Door sensors
3xPIR's
Alarm box front
control panel
panic alarm in bedroom

Basically I wan to ensure that the alarm sounds as they are entering the house and not actually in it. Gives me time to load the gun before they get to the bedroom :)

I paid something like £750 I think.

Rather than a panic alarm you might as well have another keypad in the bedroom. They normally have a panic function and you have the advantage of being able to see which zone has gone off.

Becareful with vibration sensors and monitored alarms. The normal arrangement is that you can have a couple of false alarms per year before they start charging you or even cancel your service. Parents had to remove their vibration sensors as everytime a tractor went by with a heavy load it would trigger them!

I went for an auto dialer rather than monitored, i.e. the alarm calls my mobile if it is tripped.

We had an full loaded ADT system installed in our house a couple of years ago. The insyaller was very good indeed, and depsite sensors on every door, and in everyroom, we had no redecorating to do - seamless instalation:thumb:

Despite some poor reports I saw on Scoobynet a while back re ADT, we've never had any issues or false alarms in two years. Faultless system IMHO

The only downside was the £1500 price tag...

I had 4 sensor (wired) and all the gubbins for £350...... wireless is too much of a pain with batteries & farting around.........:thumb:

Buy a half decent alarm out of CPC and get an electricial to fit it - should take no more than a day, so say 150 for the alarm and 150-200 labour

OllyK - Thanks. I won't be getting a monitored alarm but would like extra protection whilst in the house (we were robbed whilst asleep). An early break in warning would be helpful.

Thanks, interestin comments re: lack of wired mess....this would be my preferred option if they can do it with little mess.

The Crime Prevention Officer came out and had a look and gave us a few recommended installers. I think the loudness of the alarm is governed by legislation. We didnt go for a monitored alarm, good job as the number of times we trigger it would have caused a real problem, dont skimp it could cost you a lot more if you do, also you get an expert they advise the best locations and type of coverage. Only problem with wireless is the batteries.

If you want a loud siren buy a "Master Blaster" These thing are seriously loud...makes your vision go wobbly. :cool:

You will still need a standard siren as well as they do not have battery backup, but you'll never hear it as it gets competely drowned out. :lol1:

We had our wired system put in by a sparky while were re-wiring the house so we were have the walls channelled anyway. They "can" lay the wires under the floorboards / carpet and while it's to regs it isn't the best.

We have an extra pad in our bedroom and set the alarm as we go to bed from there. We isolate the kitchen so the dog doesn't set the alarm off.

Although the ADT system was a tad pricey (we did go for complete overkill) the installation was outstanding. Seriously, besides the addition of small 'dual mode' sensors in each room - you couldn't tell this guy had been:)

Have a look around the high street, Banks, Bookies, Jewellers etc and see what they've gone for:)

Kuro how old is your system and did they fit a"working" external bell box ?

As most new **T "just cant bring myself to say it" syatems don't have a live external bell box as it's an optional extra !

And you know what that means if it's a dummy external box, Cut the phone line and your in :thumb: as they only rely on an internal SCB unit which is not much good if the alam goes off with the phone line cut :lol1:

The **t fast track system was a joke and a half you as used to get the local chimney sweep fitting cirtifcated (sp) alarms :lol1:

I always thought A.D.T were a little pricey ;) :D

They prefer to get you on a long term maintenance contract, they use alot of subcontractors and then take over the service contract once installed.

There isn't an issue either with putting any wiring under carpets or floorboards, or i hope there isn't been fitting the things for almost 20 years now ;)

If you are really concerned about wiring then the right wireless equipment will do the job, and i'm not talking about the stuff from B & Q.
Most wireless stuff still requires hardwired links to bellboxes and keypads etc. However fitted a few professional wireless systems recently where the are just what they say aside from a main's supply completely wireless. Fitted in about 2 hours.
Saying all that the right installer should leave you without any visable wiring anyway.

Yup, certainy did:) ( I know becuase I accidentlayy tested it some time ago)

Homeguard at Gildersome did mine for sub £200, been in about 6 years now without any problems

Top tip: Have some ADT stickers printed to stick on the bell boxes or better still buy the ADT bell boxes off eBay :)
