Car insurance across different cars

I do often wonder just how these companies come up with their quotes.

I'm getting quoted more for a £15k M5 than for a £35k RS6, with all the same details :freak3:

Go figure.

RWD M5 - more will have visited the scenery than the awd RS6s. It probably works on a combination of the individual's track record and the type of car's track record

Yeah I guess, but then it's > half the value, slower, less powerful etc.

Not complaining as such, I know there is a price to pay for these cars, but I do wonder at the logic sometimes :)

My theory behind all car insurance is they have a large wheel Vic and Bob style, with random quotes/numbers on it. When you ring up somebody spins the wheel and thats your quote. If they get a high figure some bells rings and they all have a party in the office. :)

That might explain how a I can get a Subaru STI, 350Z cheaper than a S2000 by £300.....:wonder:

No the reason you get an STi and 350Z cheaper than an S2000 is because there is one binned pretty much every day. Read S2ki.com for today's effort - 05 Moonrock somewhere in a ditch in England :(

I was once told, rightly or wrongly off an insurance company that when a certain car falls to a level where undesirables are able to afford them, the car then becomes a higher risk.
So, more people can afford a £15k M5 than a £35k RS6. Meaning younger drivers who are at a higher risk of crashing, make the insurance go up for everyone with the same car.
Point proven years ago, when I was getting quoted more for my 3 year old 106GTI than I was for a brand new Clio 172 Mk2. As they said. Second hand values of the 106 mean younger drivers can now afford it, but they can't afford the Clio.

Spotted Here

Nobody has claimed it yet :D

Moley 28 September 2006 01:46 PM

It is all down to claim stats on each car.

In my case.....(a few years ago now)

Modified 1993 Astra GSI Turbo, value £5k, 300bhp....£700 per year
changed to....
Standard 1993 Subaru Impreza WRX, value £5k, 240bhp....£1450 per year

Fair point.
