Gauges - want to check a few things? Especially problem with oil pressure gauge
 

Recently bought some gauges and finally had them fitted today. These are the ones I have

They look great but the oil pressure gauges is faulty I think. But can I check a few things to make sure everything is OK?

1) The oil temp sits at around 92 degree when warmed up. Does this sound right?

2) The boost tops out at 20psi before droping to about 17-18psi. Does this sound right too?

3) The oil pressure gauge which I think is faulty sits at 100psi (ie, as far as the gauge can go) all the time except when warm and idling in which case it drops to 80psi. It's almost as if the gauge needle has been put on in the wrong position. Any ideas in case it's something else?

What engine oil are you using as this will effect the oil pressure? Yours seems similar to mine - I am using Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w 50 which gives higher oil pressure when driving I believe.

1) YES

2) depends on if/how the car has been mapped. boost does tail off b ut you could be getting over boost

3) you will need to do the conversion but mine sits around 6 bar when idiling and goes up to 10 bar when giving the beans. If these don't add up then it could be either the gauge or sender

10 bar!!! surprised the oil seals are still in place. My gauge sits at 100psi when cold, when it is hot and idling it drops to about 40 - 45 psi this is on 10w40 oil. When giving it some when warm it goes to 90 or thereabouts.

Pippyrips you have a problem, or a faulty gauge.

Even with 15/50 i run at about 6.5 bar max at normal operating temp under load and a lot less at tickover.

Can get about 8 bar at start up on a cold morning.

is oil pressure sender properly earthed? as this can make it stay at this also where is your oil pressure placed sandwhich plate or no3

you know when you read something and start thinking oh sh*t my engine is going to blow....

Just went and checked my peak readings on the defi's - peak is 7.6bar, and idles at around 2bar when warm. apologies for talking bo**ocks! -i'm putting it down to sleepless nights duwe to the new arrival!

My oil is Millers XFS 5w/40

7.6 bar = 110 PSI. So may be my gauge is reading right after all.

Had a big old drive today and the boost tops 22PSI and then drops to about 19-20PSI. Car has been remapped by Andy F so I assume all is OK and you can never be sure if the gauge is reading right.

Now the next question ... when driving in the dark should these gauges dim when the headlights are on. Because they are bloody bright

There's some ludicrous oil pressure readings going on out there! Glad I've got direct reading gauges and not electric!

My Autometer Cobalt gauges are killer bright as well. I never knew LEDs could be so bright. Mine do not dim with the headlights either. I looked into adding an adjustable dimmer. As the the gauge backlighting are LEDs you cannot simply add a resistor. With a resistor you can dim the lights some, I did, but it's very little. If you add too much resistance they simply go out. You need a solid state dimming circuit which pulses the power off and on rapidly giving the appearance of dimming. My guess is the clock dimmed itself when it detected the 12V from the lights circuit.
