Puppetmaster 28 September 2006 02:26 AM

Standard skirts?

I heard somewhere that you have to use a different type of paint ... as they are flexible... and using regular paint would crack....

This is true. You need a plastic primer, which allows it all to flex and not come away.

your going to get a much better finish with the spray gun, but obviously not as easy to do if you dont know what too do.

use plastic FILLER prima
then prima
then paint
then laqure.

Dont knwo what teh spray cans will look like...

Im having trouble getting the skirts off!
The screw at the front of the skirt in the wheel arch just turns, I presume the clip at the back has wriggled free of its mount and just spinning with the screw.

Is there anyway to get at the back of it? The one in the wheel arch. Or should I hack out and get another one from the breakers?

Puppetmaster 29 September 2006 12:26 AM

Erm, I haven't checked my skirt mountings yet.... is there any chance you can drill the screw head off with a High Speed Steel bit?
I want to spray my skirts too ;)

alcazar 29 September 2006 10:24 AM

IIRC, the "screw" at the front, isn't..........a screw, that is. It's a clip, and you need to prise the centre up, then pull out the whole clip.

The bolts along the bottom can also cause problems: They tend to rust, and bind in their PLASTIC holes, the square base of the plastic then turns in the square hole, and goes round:( Then it's a case of LEVERING the whole thing out, hopefully WITHOUT cracking the skirt, (don't worry, the skirts are quite flexible).

Mine have gone back with 4 new square palstic bits, and I replaced the bolts with stainless roofing bolts bought locally, (take one of your old ones into a bolt and nut stockist, address from yell.com),, or buy from Screwfix:

A bit dear from Screwfix, you have to buy 100, I bought locally and paid a couple of quid for 16 I think.

Well if that makes YOU thick, how stupid was the designer to put a screwdriver type cross in the middle of a prize-up clip?:D

did want to get mine off today but
the god dam weather is crap aswell here,

never mind il have to wait:mad:

criss are you going to smooth you skirt's off 1st
or just go ahead and prime them.
also what paint did you get...

many thanks

steve

Criss 01 October 2006 09:06 PM

I went halfrauds and got them to mix up 3cans of my paint code which is black with red flake in not sure of the code.
I bought 2 cans of plastic primer while I was there too.

Im going to smooth them out as theres a few scratches in them then give em a de-grease then spray a few coats of primer then get the top coats going and then laqure them up, should take a day or 2 depending on the weather but they won't be going back on the car for 7days to let the paint harden :thumb:

I had a god game of golf in the rain today though ;)

wildfire 01 October 2006 10:00 PM

Been thinking of sparying my skirts aswell, do you smooth them out before applying primer or after applying primer. If you smooth out first what do you use?

Criss 01 October 2006 10:33 PM

Im not too sure!

Im only smoothing mine out as they've attained a few scrawps since 1995, I will rough the surface up when the dints have been removed though so the primer sticks abit better!

As for which paper, fcuk knows. I just went to price city and bought all the types they had! Then i'll give it some trial and error with which did which the best and use the one which gave best results :thumb:

Welloilbeefhooked 01 October 2006 11:10 PM

Ok, done mine twice now.

1st time

Flatted them off completely. Removed all pimples and texture from surface.
Primed with plastic primer (Halfords stuff is quite good).
Sprayed with 1k base and then laquer.

2nd time

Flatted them off, just the top coat. 2k primed and then sprayed with 2k base and laquer.

Did it twice because single pack stuff always dulls off after a while. 2k is better if you have the breathing equipment.

Criss 05 October 2006 03:46 PM

Well, im in the middle of priming!

Had the skirts in the bath to give them a proper clen.
Just when I thought they were clean loads of mud and grime came off!
I thought, lynx cleans me a treat, so low and behold 20mins later the skirts were imaculate!

Gave them a good airing and dry before work comenced.
Sanded down with fine corse paper. Lovely and smooth!
Im priming now using the left right and then up down technique!
Looking like they should go on a white car at the moment.
Will finish off the priming and look for any drips or artefacts that shouldnt be there and then call it a day!

Keep me updated, as I would like to do mine soon!

Molbyman 06 October 2006 08:36 AM

Looking to start the colour coding of my side skirts on my 03 WRX this weekend. Not too sure what to do with the nasty bit of black plastic just in- front of the rear wheels and at the bottom of the door that seems to be there to protect the paint work from stone chips.
Can this be removed or colour coded too? Seems a shame to have everything painted and one piece of tacky plastic showing. Anyone else had this dilemma?

solosteve 06 October 2006 10:42 PM

we have that piece on classic's aswell some peeps leave it alone...
dont know why..hard to remove maybe...

im going to rip mine off and paint it aswell

hopefully the right thing...
if not, what can go wrong...
il just glue it back in place....

steve

Molbyman 07 October 2006 05:31 PM

The side piece just pulls off - held in place with 2 push-in plugs, one of which broke off on each side. However, as you say can easily be glued back on so I prefer to have them painted too.

Criss 08 October 2006 11:04 AM

The skirt I sanded was crap.
The rest were perfect :thumb:

Did 3 coats of primer, 2 wet then 1 dry
let it dry overnight
4 coats of 47a paint (mica black) 2 wet 2 dry
let it dry
2 coats of laquer both dry

let dry then polished :thumb:

the back left looks crap as the plastic where I sanded looked like suede, it didn't sand properly and sort of flaked up!

So thank god I only sanded one!

Trip to a breakers will sort me the 1/2 I need and will do it again without sanding

Personally I think the lynx was the base to a good finish :thumb:

I spent most of the time prepping and im happy with the result except for the above skirt.

Welloilbeefhooked 08 October 2006 11:19 AM

Ok, how about this for an idea. Try sanding the skirts, even if you get it fluffing up dont worry. Buy some 2k primer, mix it and brush it on. Leave it 24hrs and then sand it smooth. This is really easy to do and you dont end up with brush marks. Be careful not to go through. Its a superb base for the top coat and acts as a sealer between the skirt and top coats.

Use 400 then 800 to sand the primer. 400 hundred until the brush marks have just about gone, then 800 to smooth for top coat.

I should start a business on here painting peoples side skirts at work. Its so easy with a booth and three spray guns :)

Puppetmaster 30 October 2006 08:42 PM

maybe you should.....
if you need to practice first.. I'll let you do mine ;)

the big yim 30 October 2006 09:01 PM

I have been practicing since I was 15, I now hate cars and have multicoloured lungs :)

Thought about setting up an ebay shop for colour coding, would have to clear it all with my boss first though
