runtime error on pc :(

ok last night my computer all of a sudden came up with a runtime error and then left me stranded on my wallpaper with no icons so i proceed to turn it off and then when it's about to go into windows it says something along the lines of run time stop if this is the first time this has happened try rebooting, if not follow instructions below.
so i reset again and exactly the same thing happens, so then i read what it says and it basically tells me to search for virus's only i am unable to actually log on to do this?:(
i also have tried booting up in safe mode using F8 key i can get to the options but not safe mode it is just having none of it....

anyone know or have had this happen if so any help would be glorious!:)..

Ta very much Pete

Sounds like a corrupted driver of some kind. If you can't even get in to safe mode you're a bit stuffed. You can try putting your original install CD in and try doing a repair, but I've yet to have one of those actually work. More likely it's going to be a format and re-install. I trust you keep your data backed up on on a separate drive / partition from you O/S?

Computer related would be the best place for this ..... :D

But I agree with what Ollyk says ... though what were you doing when all went 't*ts up'? Surfing to some dodgy web site maybe? If your anti-virus wasn't up to date then you maybe infected ...

If you have another PC put the disk into that as a 2nd disk and virus check it ...

Going forward consider getting Norton Ghost and image a base set up, takes about 20 mins to get back to a base level then use the backup to get your data back.

As suggested above - you may be able to check / fix the drive if you can stick it in another machine as a second drive. Not being funny, but if you're asking on here for advice, it may not be the sort of thing you want to be undertaking yourself anyway.
