balls, just blown my gearbox up
i knew it was coming, but didn't expect it this soon...had one of API's clutches fitted at XS a week ago and after nailing it from a 10mph rolling start a huge bang and lots of grinding. managed to get home by (just about), engaging third and fourth. Running I'd guess just below 300 at the mo, I plan to upgrade to TD05, fmic, 565's, fuel regulator etc so i guess its time for a six speed.
opinions please people, i've spoken to David at api previously (planning ahead ;)), so i know my options are limited to a rebuild using a hybred 5spd sti box or an all new 6 speed...what everyone else running? ian MY00 wagon btw:) |
PPG here
retains factory 5th but changes the cogs 1 - 4 noisy but i've been told it would be hard for even me to break , i keep trying lol if i didn't do quarter mile racing then i'd probably have gone for davids options, v5/v6 saloon box or 6-speed |

if its a stragith cut box then you get that "race car" whine in gear, you can get a helical cut PPG box which is nearly as strong but virtually eliminates the whine so im told....
typically a PPG build is about 2.5k, but it really is a fit and forget solution. So potentially it could pay for itself if you kept breaking standard box's |

what power is the car running? i hear that STI6 boxes are just about as strong as standard 5 speeders get, the P1 would be an STI5 box with a longer 5th?
|
an sti8/9 box will take over 500bhp

yeah a 6 speed one will, although the synchros seem to be questionable at higher power levels.
It depends if you want the 6 speed ratios though, personally, i dont, so when mine goes i would like to invest in a ppg. The 6 speed will work out slightly cheaper though :) |

does anyone know if there is a differnece between the sti6 box (754VBAAA), and the P1 box...I'm assuming its very similar except for a taller 5th?
|
sorry i shoudl have been clearer, 500+ would be a higher power level, 350 is nothing to it.
|
anyone know if i wil need a new rear diff if i just change the MY00 gearbox internals for P1 internals?
|
lmao, nee probs neilo

I opted for uprated gearsets in mine after fitting a TD05 and the gearbox giving up soon after.
Still not a 'fit and forget' option as it still uses syncros, which will be subject to normal wear and tear. Also if you are trying to keep the cost down (ie below about £2.7k/2.8k) then you will have to retain the OE forks. Billet forks are costly at about £320 for 1-4 and another £260 for 5th and reverse. 6 Speed should provide you with the same as a basic uprated gearset option, albeit at a cheaper cost (available for around £1.5k+), with the downsides coming by way of ratios and weight. Personally wouldn't bother with 5 speed STi gearsets unless it works out very cheap. |
IMHO:
Only 2 people to discuss this with, David at API and/or Paul at Zen. I think you can get a 5 speed PPG set for the 6 speeder now. I hope you are all right about the v6 trans as I am relying on it for next years racing. API will be cleaning it up. Can't justify the PPG cost atm with a wimpish 380 x 360 2 litre :norty: Remember a 6 speeder is 30Kg more... Bob's, I think you are right, especially with you car's performance on the strip if you are ok with the £ Graham |
30kg in a non-competition car isnt going to make much difference. Weight of half a tank of fuel, give or take?

AFAIK, prodrive dropped the complet 4dr drivetrain in the 2 door shell, right down to the brakes, driveshafts and ABS. The only boxes' with 'taller' gears to an equivalent standard box are the V-limited ver 5/6 gearboxes. I thought P1's had a standard spread with a 22mph/1000rpm, same as the STI. |
Agree Bob. In a drag/hillclimb car things become more focused?
|
Indeed. Speaking of which, do you run a smaller tank?
I find that even 20-25 litres isn't sufficient to avoid fuel surge on an OE tank when attacking the right hand bends, which means running at least half a tankful which = unnecessary weight. Doesn't effect me as mines a daily runaround but certainly something I would consider addressing on a competition car. |
thanks for the replies so far gents, I've spoken to David at API and his solution is lookng like the best option so far; he has a sti v5 transmission coming in from japan this weekend which he could use with my gearbox case and fifth to create a hybred solution...still keeping an open mind on other solutions at present though.

Whats the STi5 option going to cost? Close to £1k?

I was going to say £1k is too much IMHO, but £1700
You can pick up a 6 speed for less than that and it will be a stronger option. Otherwise might be worth speaking to Mark (Lateral) to see if he can put together a uprated gearkit for you. |
Never had any fuel surge problem on the Spec C under track conditions, even with less than a 1/4 of a tank left. :)
|
from what I have heard you drive like a girl around corners :p

from converstions i remember having you can still use the 5 speed clutch with a 6 speed box, the diameter is only 5 or 10mm different IIRC.
