Road tax - Classic Vs Bug-eye. Huh..?
 

The wife and I are a bit confused, although I'm the happier of the two. I've done some searching but can't find anything specific.

I've got a 2000-year UK Classic Turbo and at the end of June my tax was £175. My wife has a 2001 UK WRX and her tax (due for renewal in the next few days) is £190.

We're just a bit baffled as to why the two cars would be different, given that they effectively share the same engine and with the wife's having 3 x catalytic converters (UK Classics have 2) it could be argued that it's more CO2 friendly.

Looking at the V5Cs, my Classic doesn't have any emissions details listed but the wife's does. Relevant or irrelevant..?

relevant mate. My Evo VIII is an import and is taxed as a car registered prior to 1982, so I only pay £175.000. The "british" evo's are all £190.00.

Well, I could tax a 1986 Nissan Sunny with no cats for £110 and that puts out more pollution than both of them put together :D

haven't they changed tax prices as mine was £170 newage sti in march this year and my friend end of july newage wrx £190 should imagine next year they'l be the same!

Hmmm, I think this is the best assumption to go with to be honest. Appreciate all the replies but the trend seems to be import related -- this doesn't apply because both my Classic and the wife's WRX are UK cars.

It's something to do with the age of the car - my MY99 UK Turbo was cheaper to tax than the Mrs 2002 206 Cabriolet. I asked at the Post Office about this and they said due to the age of the Impreza the tax is paid on engine size. As the Peugeot is a 2002 tax is paid on the amount of emissions.

So from reading the above threads I presume the change is from 2001 on...

cars that are y reg and newer are taxed on there emissions, older cars are taxed on the engine size, up to 1549cc is £110 for 12 month and £60.50 for 6 months cars over 1549cc are £175 for 12months and £96.25 for 6 months. have a look on your reg document under taxation class the older cars are classed as PLG(private/ light goods) newer cars are PC(petrol car) DC (diesel car) etc

Tax for private vehicles registered before 1st March 2001 is based on engine size only. Vehicles registered on or after 1st March 2001 are based on CO2 emissions and fuel type.

Just for anyone that might be interested, regardless of the 2001 changes in taxation, I thought I'd see if there was any emissions data for my 2000-year Classic Turbo (given that my wife is being charged slightly more for her 2001 WRX and it 'should' be more efficient).

I had a sniff inside the CO2 emissions database - http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk and then the VED search option where there's a link to historic data - http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/downloads/index.asp

Looks like my Classic Turbo (MY99/00) spits out 239 CO2 g/km. The wife's WRX spits out 242. Mmm, that 3rd cat in her system works really well then. :wonder:

It converts Carbon monoxide (CO) to Dioxide (CO2), along with dealing with oxides of nitrogen and unburnt fuel (hydrocarbons - HC ). :)

think u will find it was the liberals that want that rule in.
