Who's been to Arran?
Got a week booked in Arran for me and the Mrs, was just wondering if anyone here had been and had any recommendations for places to visit, eat out, things to do etc....
Cheers |
Yes it was cold bleak and dull so we just got pissed. enjoy :thumb:

I live in the town you get the ferry from(Ardrossan),don't stop till you get to the boat as it's a right shi*hole and full of drug takers and bandits.
Arran is a nice place and Brodick castle is a good visit, goat fell is quite a easy climb and the views are superb, hire a bike as well and pedal about the island, weather should be ok at thistime of year but can change fast. My sister is a cleaner on the ferry and she says its been hot the last few days. Hope that helps. Mac |
My other halves Aunt & Uncle stay there every so often - apparently it is very nice (but they are in their 50's)

Visited Arran earlier this year in a 6 hour stage of an adventure race. 2 of my team ran from Brodick to the top of Goat Fell and back 2hrs 36mins!!. The view from there is amazing although I suggest you take a more leisurely pace than they did - i.e. take a day to do it! ;)
The local council are putting in quite a few mountain bike trails that we were able to use and were good fun ranging from green through to red. The scenery is amazing, so much so that I will be going back there soon to take in the rest of the island :thumb: http://www.visitarran.net/ |
If you want to see loads of seals, the beach at Kildonan is a good place to go. There is a cheese factory near there on the main road (heading towards Kilmory) that do some delicious chesses and used to give out free samples.
There's a distillery near Lochranza - more free samples! |
Do remember a week "expedition" as a teenager myself, plenty of entertaining bits, but one trick I learned is not to camp in Glen Sannox when it's windy. The geography is great for funneling the wind up to tent-destroying speeds (we measured ~90mph gusts before the anemometer broke). A long while back, but I also seem to remember the bar at the Corrie hotel being somewhere where "last orders" was not a very common phrase . . . .

Arran, great little island, think of it as the highlands in minature. You can see Golden Eagles, stags rutting and seals all within an hour of leaving the boat. It's a magical island that everyone should visit. Go up the track through Glen Rosa to the Saddle. You wont be able to climb down to Glen Sannox at the moment due to repairs to the path, but you wont regret the walk, trust me. Forget the Brodick castle route to Goat Fell, full of tourists and overrated. If you want to bag a Corbett go via Corrie. Visit Lochranza, look up some history on the area, walk the "Cock of Arran". The geology and rocks of Arran were formed 50-60 million years ago. Get pissed, go to the the Ormidale Hotel for sounds and have a good trip :)

Thanks everyone :)

I've been on a school A-level trip a fair few years ago. had to pay some scots lads a fortune to get us some beer the robbing gits! they then tried to pull all the birds on the trip. Gave one lass some weed that made her so spaced out she couldn't walk and we had to carry her back and sneek her into the hostel we were in without the Teachers finding out.
Oh and I got eaten alive by midges! Lovely place! :D |
I went on a school trip too, granted it was about 1994 though. what I remember it was actually ok but it didnt help it being freezing and having to stand in rivers etc collecting samples of stuff. Put a bit of a downer on it that did ;)
