Utorrent or all of them?) - slooooooooow
Tried using this today, and it's at 20kB/s or lower typically, sometimes up in the 30s or 40's but generally sloooooow.
Tried various torrents with varying seeds/leechers etc. Opened up 10 ports on router etc. Configured the uTorrent according to website but still slow although slightly faster maybe. Any ideas? on 8mb (running at 6mb currently) on BT total bb/bt home hub etc.) Or is torrenting(???!) just a big pile of crap? |
Not using 6881-6889 like the other torrents.

ISP's have been known to throttle certain ports. It can also take a fair bit of time for a torrent to reach a decent dl speed. I still find Azareaus to be one of the better bt apps.

You clearly dont understand how torrents work, it all depends on how many seeders there are, and their upload speeds. Look it up on wikipedia or something...

Try azureus, Utorrent is very slow!
I can only use Utorrent as im on xp64 and nothing else works :-( |
Tried Azureus and still slow. 30kB for something with 17(141 in swarm) seeds and 50(61) peers. What is good and what is bad? Are there certain files/sites with far higher seed numbers that would result in faster downloads?
Anyway, I shouldn't have to understand the underlying theories and technologies, what I do need is to check the settings to ensure I'm doing things right and understand some basics. The basics is that it's file sharing and the more sharing the better. However what's good? 10, 100, 1000, 10000, 100000 etc.?? |
I average 140k+ with occasionally up near 400k on 4Mb cable.

i rekon bt will be stopping your download speeds.........
they do with me, even if i setup port forwarding and mess about with my router, i can get a max of 150kbs which lasts all of 5 mins before it comes back down again. i can then change the ports, get the speed back up, and then it comes back down again :lol1: try a google on bt and torrents :) i went to work to use my tiscali setup and that is crap as well :mad: |

News [Internet] Friday 24th March 2006 BT cracks down on broadband data gluttons 5:44PM BT is cracking down on data gluttons, notifying around 3,000 of its broadband users that they will either have to cut down or pay up for excessive use of its broadband connections. It says it is targeting subscribers that are downloading up to 200GB every month. Current limits to its broadband offerings range between 2 and 40GB per month. It says it won't take action against subscribers who occasionally go over this limit. BT is not alone in curbing its more enthusiastic users. Only a week ago Freedom2Surf took similar action. Other ISPs employ shaping technology that chokes traffic on peer-to-peer networks in order to free up bandwidth for regular surfing and email data. With ever increasing bandwidths being rolled out as standard services, downloading has never been faster. Subscribers getting through 200GB a month are doing more than browsing, email and enjoying the odd download. At up to 6.7GB a day, these people are either running a business through their consumer broadband connection or downloading a movie a day. Try siging up to a torrent forum like demonoid.
I get my trackers from there, I get very high speeds usually unless the torrent is very old! Say a torremt has 100 seeds and 130leechers (which you would be one) Them 100 seeders have to allow a small amount of bandwidth for each file they are uploading so really you'll ibly recieve 0.5kbps off each as they are uploading to other people and uploading other files all over the world! But yes, the more seeds usually the faster then DL Try changing the speed of your line in the options to 10meg, Im on 2meg and I have mine set to 4meg |
Hardly downloaded much. 4 GB according to the router in the last month. limit is 40GB so no way near so why block me?

like i say, i spent the best part of an evening pissing around with router options, messing with NAT rules, forwarding ports, i thought i had hit the big time when it jumped up from 5kbs to around 150kbs i had around 80/90 connections IIRC then it came back down to 5/6kbs i left it running over night at 5/6 and woke up to find it had stopped compleatly, i changed the port settings and it started up again, went to work and found it had stopped 1 hour or so later :rolleyes: i was uploading at 25kbs at the time :rolleyes: |

you can switch ports around, but in my case, it was a short lived high what are you wanting from torrents? (files etc etc?) |
Just some old tv shows from 80s that you can't buy anyway.
I guess many ISPs will start/continue this rendering torrents very much yesterdays technology/news etc. |

they lure us with faster and faster speeds, but throttle us at the same time, its very ironic do you know much of IRC? there is bound to be a server out there with what you are looking for, finding it will take a lot of time, i found a bloke who just had tv stuff Connecting to irc.phazenet.com (6667) #opmovies is one of them, although most irc networks have there fair share TBH |
It will most likely be your isp throttling your downloads. Pipex amongst others does this. You can get around it however by encrypting the traffic through utorrent or azeureus so your isp doesn't realise you're downloading torrents.

Also if your router supports UPnP try enabling this and forget port forwarding. Set your client to use a random high port number i.e. 55332. Make sure your maximum number of torrent/global connections arent set too high depending on you max u/l speed etc, mines are 88/146. My ISP has started to use traffic shaping (for file sharing apps) and with a bit of mucking about I've seen my average dl speeds of 20 -40 Kb/s rise to over 200 Kb/s with well seeded torrents.
