Its not the speed that needs changing. Its peoples attitude. Some damn rude ignorant people on the roads who think there better than others.

Maybe a bit of courtesy might cut down accidents.;)

Yes it might. BUT the 85 percentile method is based on facts and setting speeds at that level means the miniumum of non-compliance AND minimum accidents. Fact! Do some googling to find out more details (visit the ABD site and safe Speed for example). By setting them at average speeds then a) more people will be speeding (oh, more revenue for Gordo ..... goodo ... NOT) and there will be more accidents. And there was me thinking the gov. was there to serve and protect us the electorate! Silly me.

OH dear why not spend the money sorting the problem, lack of continued driver training !
Or get rid of the current administration and get someone with common sense to look after the road systems (like its ever going to happen !)

"percentile" Now thats a good word!

One of a set of points on a scale arrived at by dividing a group into parts in order of magnitude. For example, a score equal to or greater than 97 percent of those attained on an examination is said to be in the 97th percentile.

Whatever one says about "speed kills", it cannot be denied that excessive speed reduces the safety margins significantly should there be any kind of an incident.

INAPPROPRIATE speed kills. :nono:

Come on Les! This is just pandering to the authorities. They want people to think like this. How about we reduce the airspeed of all aircraft to less than 50mph and ensure they fly no more than 20 feet off the ground because we know that speed and excessive altitude kill ...?

did u read the article? it sclearly states (with proof) that accident risks are lower upto the 85th percentile (about 12 mph in the graph) once above the 85th percentile the accident risk rises sharply. there is no truth in the theory that the faster u go over the speed limit the higer the risk.

also we have all seen the advert where it says " im 8 times more likley to live if u hit me at 30mph but im 8 times more likely to die if you travel at 35 mph" ??????

so how come most of the cameras dont flash u till u are above 35?

corradoboy 20 August 2006 04:07 PM

Many studies have proven that good drivers travelling in excess of the limit are paying much more attention to the task of driving than those limping around well below the limit. Of course, not everyone is a good driver, and there are some above the limit who shouldn't even have a car, which is where effective policing with authoritative discretion will always give better results than the current policy.

They want to set the speed limits at a level where >15% will break them... i.e. they are ensuring themselves a speeding fine income. Thieving labour scum.

Simes777 20 August 2006 05:08 PM

We'll be driving at 14mph on the M25 soon. :brickwall

555Rob555 20 August 2006 05:23 PM

Whenever I get on the M25 the traffic is slower than that anyway:lol1:

Leslie 22 August 2006 01:14 PM

Phil WRX,

Yes I did read the article and did you notice that I said "excessive speed"? You also state the accident risk increases markedly above the 85% Percentile, so what are you trying to say?, that must include exceeding the speed limit then!

My point that excessive speed reduces safety marigins cannot be denied.

hutton d

Not a lot of planes would fly at 50 MPH! Aircraft are in a completely different environment in considerably less constricted space and when flying IFR or in controlled airspace are radar or procedurally monitored under ground control. In airport control zones and in other controlled airspace speed limits are often applied in order to increase safety separation also. Under VFR away from controlled airspace, the comparative lack of constriction which permits VFR rules makes speed limits unnecessary.

I do however decry the attempts to reduce speed limits according to councils' wishes all over the country, that is unnecessary and will increase congestion and cause greater accident risk in my opinion. If people greatly exceed the 60 MPH limit on B roads then we need more traffic police to stop that as well as the uninsured and licensed ones as well as drunks etc.

Speed DOESN'T kill FFS, it's that sudden stop at the end............ ;) :thumb:
