Sound Icon On Mac iBook

Hi

A few days ago, my 4 month old iBook 12" started to show the Sound icon on boot up, when it would race by itself, to max level and then stay there, making the "quacking" noise. Pressing F4 would then send the sound level bar racing the opposite direction to zero and then back up again. It's almost as if the key's stuck - but it isn't. Any ideas folks?

Cheers

Very odd. The volume level controls are usualy only activated by F4 and F5 on the keyboard, so it does sound as though they are sticking.

Here's something to try though. Between F5 and F6 you have a little screw, turn it until the slot is horizontal, then look for the little latches which are between the ESC and F1 keys and the F11 and F12 keys. Pull the the latches towards the 1 and Delete keys and you should be able to lift the keyboard out.

See if there is any debris where the function keys would normally be and if there is, remove it. Also check the keys on the keyboard themselves and make sure the area is clean.

With the keyboard still in it's loose state, reboot and see if the problem still occurs. If it does then it might be a faulty keyboard or a loose connector, you could have a look here on how to check the connection between keyboard and logicboard.

Will do Markus. Many thanks.
