Get that ****e out your engine asap! Only use a minimum semi synthetic 10w40. Or better, a quality fully synthetic such mobil 1 , castrol, motul, millers, etc.

Ok, im gonna change next weekend and im thinking about one of these oils

QUAKER STATE DE LUXE SYNTHETIC 10W-40

CASTROL EDGE SPORT 10W-60

castrol, with out a doubt. :thumb:

kildare scooby 16 August 2006 11:10 PM

h i use castrol aswell and was recommended a few times mobil 15w 50 either

I personally would go the semi synth route. Switching to a fully synthetic after you have been using semi can cause oil leaks on various seals (do a search for more info) so I imagine the problem would be more likely after switching from a mineral to a fully synth

Are you in the uk? that oil your are using 20w/50 is well out of spec for your engine. Was this oil in the car when you bought it? Thick oil can hide a multitude of sins, hope you car is okay when you change the oil.

I'd buy a cheap semi synth 10w40 and new filter, run it for 100 miles to flush the way under spec and out of range stuff you have in at the moment.

Then replace the oil and filter again, using a good quality 10w40 (or 10w50 if used on track or autobahn) of your choice. I would use either Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS or Motul 300V but they are pricey.

I went down this route a couple of weeks ago - spent days reading all the threads I could find, asked loads of questions and got some very good advice. I've only just bought the car (a my94 WRX) and so wanted to change the oil so I know it's been done. At the last minute the garage that was going to do the oil change for me (using shell helix) decided to close and go on holiday - the *******, he knew I wanted this job doing so I thought stuff you I'll do it myself. I ended up using COMMA fully synth 5w40, got 5 litres for 26quid. All I can say is WOW - what a difference, the drive is a lot smoother, it's not as "tappety" as it was and it just feels like a different car. Worth every penny IMO although no doubt someone's going to come on and say "get comma out it's crap" or "you've used the wrong oil, you should have used ............ etc."

I´m gonna use Mobil 1 5W/50 rally formula. I live in the north of sweden and it gets pretty cold in the winter. So thats why im gonna use 5W instead of 10W.

If thats doesnt work out well i´ll switch to a semi synt 10W/40

I'd steer clear of mobil 1 it's too thin for the engine, i use a semi 5w/40 change it every 3k, it's black even then ! plus working for an oil company i get 25 litre can for £21 8)

I use Silkolene Pros 10w50 (SJ spec. , £37.50 for 5 litres ) to protect my MY99 turbo' s engine, one of the best on offer, recommended.

Been through a few. Started with Silko ProS 10W50, but found it took too long to get up to temp and the car felt sluggish in the winter. Changed to Silko ProS 5W40 and was much more happy with the grade, reaching temp in under 10 minutes and running very smoothly and freely. Changed to Millers CFS but was then told by an oil specialist that this product has fallen way behind the current top specification for a quality fully synth oil, and is kept going as it's a long standing good seller. Then stumbled across Fuch's (who make Silkolene) Titan Supersyn SL 5W40 at my local Euro Car Parts store. 25 litre drums are £86, so allowing for 5 1/2 oil changes (based on a 4 1/2 litre drop) it comes in at about £16 a change :luxhello: More than happy with its performance, and had it's quality verified by SNet's "oilman" whom sells it himself.
