£3000 to spend..... scoob or evo???
 

got around £3000 for my next car, thinking either scoob (not a sportswagon this time) or evo 1/2/3, so for my £3000 which would give me best 0-60 and handling? :wonder: anyone had both and can recommend one above the other? cheers for any help :thumb:

wrx type ra for £4000 with £thousands of extras inc greddy fmic ! best 0-100 ! and a true drivers car !

there was a red evo3 on the MLR for 4k, fully track prepped and looking good, been on a while so looking good for a £3k offer ;)

My honest opinion (and Im ready to be flamed!) is that at £3k theres every likelihood either car will be a bit of a dog so cross your fingers and get pally with a mechanic :)

£3k may be a bit tight to get something that's any good. that said there's a uk classic in the for sale sections on here for £3.5k. well looked after and good spec for the money.

as people have said though, raise your budget to £4k and there's a whole host of other choices.

Are you familiar with the associated running costs of a Scoob or Evo?
If not then prepare for a shock :) If you are then as above about upping your budget to £4k :)

i spent just over 3k on my wrx and its not really dodgy or a dog by any means but has needed some repairs and upgrades etc. i would personally have liked to have waited till i had around 4k to save some hassle, but thats a lesson learnt. be patient save a little or have a good mechanic mate like me who will do jobs on the side...

oh and dont prang your car as much as me either...

I only paid 3k for my '95 WRX,it was up for 4k but took advantage of the fact that the seller had just got out of prison and was skint...waved the cash under his nose and he couldnt resist....;)

What a load of **** in this thread! I bought my 55k mile 94 wrx for £2700 nearly a month ago, only bad bits are door has minor crash damage and leaking rocker cover gasket. Both of which i am sorting for under £100.

Btw did i mention i have done over 1.5k miles in it, raced it at santa pod last weekend, ran 13s in my standard 'dog' as its so nicely called on this subaru loving forum!

u cant say it is great after a month. the opinions are very accurate i think, you take a big risk buying a scooby/evo for £3000

I agree with 13secs you can get a good un for 3k. I have had mine for over a year and touch wood had no problems with it apart from a flasher unit which has given up the ghost in the past 3 days (cheap fix). Since I have had it, I have fully decatted it and had a power fc fitted and mapped and touch wood its still running strong with over 130000K on the clock. All panels are straight, few stone chips (to be expected on a 14yr old car).

Its a risk buying anything these days, even if you got a brand new car (more money obviously) you can still get problems

I'm gonna pick you up on two things there. 1) the exceptionally low milage for a vehicle of that age. There are VERY few with that kind of milage on them. You got lucky! Congratulations!

2) You've only had the car a month! Although I hope for the sake of your wallet you can come back on here in a year and go "up yours Ns04, it's still fine" :)

Most cars of that age will -at the very least- need some TLC and minor work doing- it all costs! Many will ned major consumables replaced, just changing a clutch for something decent will cost one sixth of the value of the car, then you have the insurance, there's another sixth of the value (if you're experienced with good NCB) if not, figure on more like a third! Then you have servicing, a major service will cost you another sixth of the purchase price, then you have the fuel (if you run an import on any less than SUL, you're asking for trouble IMHO). It goes on and on.

Ther are a couple of exceptions, but generally speaking 3k isn't enough for a good scooby!! I'd argue that for most people it'll just end in tears!

Whilst I'm sure there are bargains out there - you'd be lucky to find one.

I paid twice that amount for my car, and the day after I got it the bottom end went on the engine. £2000 later it was fixed, but my £6000 car had quickly escalated to £8000. It has since cost me for tyres, shock absorbers, ARB, droplinks, manifold, up-pipe, turbo inlet pipe, rear wheel bearing, and it will soon need a set of front brake discs and pads. With the exception of the ARB and droplinks, these were all necessary replacements due to the originals failing.

It's not buying the car in the first place that's the problem - it's financing what happens if something goes wrong. With older models, it's not so much "if", as "when".

A few years ago I had a Mitsubishi Lancer GSR 1.8 Turbo, the model before the official Evo 1. It had the same 4x4 transmission as the evo's, short ratio box, and steamed up the 1/4 mile at crail in 13.5 seconds as a completely standard car. Camskill sell cheap service and performance parts for them. Insurance is very cheap (at 19 I paid £740 fully comp), and good ones can be had from £2000. Change the front bumper and rear spoiler, and nobody will be able to tell it's not an evo. Worth considering?

yep had one before hence my nick, i dont drive very often, work long shifts with days between them so it's cool :)

i agree, that's why i've set the 3k budget, maybe one will turn up at local auctions, or may catch one on ebay (after viewing with my friendly mechanic, cost = 3pints down the local :D)

hmm, ebay and autotrader say different, besides bought my wagon with slight damage for £2800 last time around and had no trouble at all, nothing needed replacing and nothing went, great performance at a great price, only financial circumstances at the time caused me to sell it :(

i paid £2500 for my 93 wrx wagon and its been ok so far but like you all say somethings bound to go wrong soon! i work for a main dealer so im hopeing when anything goes bang i can get the work done for free its not a bad car but my fingers are crossed.

Depends how lucky you are.

90% of £3k WRX's are dogs, but find one of the 10% and your laughing.

I have learnt this the hard way, as my brothers £3200 WRX he has just bought puts mine to shame (and mine cost a lot more than £3k)

year very true i hope i did get lucky as i have no more money to put it right when it does a big style bang,it needs quite a bit of tlc but ill get there so take time and look im sure you will do ok turbowrxwagon
