Religous Types - Ever questioned your faith ?

Why do Religions feel the need to install lightning conductors on their places of worship :Suspiciou

lightning101 14 August 2006 01:21 PM

God told them to :Suspiciou

TopBanana 14 August 2006 01:22 PM

My plane got struck by lightning yesterday

lightning101 14 August 2006 01:23 PM

I wish I had my own plane :(

Duck_Pond 14 August 2006 01:23 PM

Did it burn the wood? :(

Mick 14 August 2006 01:25 PM

Perhaps for the same reasons we look right, look left and right again before crossing the road :lol1:

Sbradley 14 August 2006 01:27 PM

Well duh...

It's because the Ecclesiastical Insurance Society doesn't cover for acts of God.

True - you couldn't make it up...

SB

lightning101 14 August 2006 01:29 PM

But EVERYTHING is an act of god :Suspiciou or is it the divine goddess ?

Sbradley 14 August 2006 01:34 PM

Hmmm :wonder:

Maybe I should get into the insurance business then?

SB

lightning101 14 August 2006 01:37 PM

Reminds me of the Billy Connolly film where he sues the church as gods representatives, as an act of god destroyed his boat :thumb:

Sbradley 14 August 2006 01:44 PM

Great film - The man who sued God.

Recommended to me by my vicar, actually. :)

There is nothing to say that one cannot take action to avoid such a thing. Not a very clever thread however with the underlying effort at denigration.

You know me Les - I don't need to hide my feelings about Religion  .

Thanks for your worthless contribution to a stupid thread :lol1: .

While you're here - maybe you can explain why churches feel the need to take preventative action against acts of God - maybe God doesn't like churches ?

Shark Man 14 August 2006 03:47 PM

As a Jedi, I need no lightning conductor, as the will of the force will dictate to where it strikes :)

True faith young jedi - the force is strong :)

Proof that Jedi is a better Faith than Christianity :notworthy

J4CKO 14 August 2006 03:55 PM

Les, why does the question so bad.

Surely if they are truly faithful it will only make it stronger and dont these kind of questions need asking occasionally ?

Leslie 15 August 2006 01:20 PM

I don't think it was entirely worthless Jasey. I don't think a lightning strike is so much an act of God, morely just a natural event and it is sensible to protect against it. I did not thing too much of the inference behind the question, but then I wouldn't would I, for similar reasons to yours being dead against religion. Quite reasonable to defend it don't you think?

I hope that answers your question as well J4CKO.

Food for thought, even if the lightening is a natural event, one would hope that god could deflect the lightening bolt so and not to damage the church. If he dosn't it brings up a number of interesting possibilities:
1) You've got the wrong god and so he's happy to see your church burn
2) God really isn't interested in what humans do
3) God doesn't have the power to interfere
4) God is dead
5) God never existed.

Iwan 15 August 2006 01:47 PM

Why put a roof on the church, if he can deflect lightning then surely he can deflect rain too?

I thought "God" was the creator of everything including the Earth and everything on it and everything that affects it.

If you're saying this isn't the case then maybe there is something in this religion stuff after all :wonder:

SJ_Skyline 16 August 2006 10:57 AM

Anybody remember this? ;)

1984 - NEW BISHOP
(County Durham)
David Jenkins becomes the new Bishop of Durham. He is noted for his outspoken and controversial beliefs, including doubts over the resurrection of Christ and the Virgin birth. He is consecrated at York Minster.

July 1984 - MINSTER FIRE
(York)
A major fire destroys parts of York Minster after it is hit by lightning.

:lol1:

Much depends on which god you choose to follow. Most of the gods as described by organised religions are supposed to be omnipotent and omniscient. This in itself creates logical inconsitencies. However deists (god created the universe and then had nothing more to do with it) and theists (belief in a personal god but not one of the organised religions) are a little more wooley about the whole thing.

Leslie 19 August 2006 12:36 PM

Where did I say that Jasey?
