Not sure how many people are aware, but SAINSBURYS petrol stations are now selling 97 octane SUPER UNLEADED!!!!!!

Not sure whether this is a national thing, but Leamington Spa & Rugby have it.

Oh, and the other good thing is that it's MEGA CHEAP (well compared to your normal petrol stations it is!!! 83p a litre http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif)

I have had TWO tanks fulls in my highly moddied Escort Cossie, and there is no problems with performance or pinking!!!!!

Fill ya tanks! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Shaun.

If it goes national at sainsburys, Esso will price match, and it will come down everywhere. Any more reports? I will check my local sains tonight.

Maybe I can justify the switch to 97 now http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Shaun

I've noticed this as well. My local (Old West Station, Tunbridge Wells) has 97 RON.

It would appear to me that they have replaced thier 'City Petrol' pumps with SUL ones. (hope they flushed them first!)

This is good news. Now all we want is lower SUL prices, 84.6 is still a bit high for my liking, 79.9 for SUL would be excellent http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

But I guess seeing as I was payin 86.? for 95 RON a month or two ago I should not really complain too much.

Bajie 23 October 2000 01:23 PM

I'm not too convinced with Esso's price matching.
There is an Esso franchised dealer in Alperton and a non-franchised dealer almost within spitting distance.
The non-franchised is always at least a penny cheaper. Why!!!
Guess which one has stopped selling Super Unleaded ...

XRS 23 October 2000 01:25 PM

Yes,

Eastbourne Sainsbury's has had SUL for a few weeks now. It started at 82.5p and is now 84.5p. Much better than the local Esso which was charging 87.9p before the last increase. I did think I noticed a little hesitancy at high revs, but it should be OK, especially as I'm also using OB.

phill chinn 23 October 2000 01:28 PM

sainsburys at park gate, southampton has got SUL, thats where i was getting mine during the blockade.

Markus 23 October 2000 01:32 PM

ooh! price matching for SUL, yummy! that would be nice. Would then seriously consider running the beasty on SUL instead of 95.

To be honest i've not really noticed too much difference between 95 & 97. I did a run to and from Münster in Germany a while back and use 98 (I love europe!) all the way there and back (approx 600 miles) and did not really notice much difference, well, apart from it being cheaper http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif, but we won't get into that.

JayDee 23 October 2000 01:58 PM

Yup, Sainsbury's 97 RON here in Newport South Wales - 82.5 last time I filled there (a few weeks ago now) and your Sainsbury's loyalty card is worth and extra 1p per litre, and they used to do up to 4p per litr off if u spent > £100 (up till about a month ago at least - not sure today as haven't shopped there recently

Good stuff, too

JD
(I've edited to 82.5 p per litre !!!!)

carl 23 October 2000 02:00 PM

Are you sure it's 97RON super (i.e. does it say that on the pump?). A few years ago Tesco's used to sell low-benzene unleaded (or was it low-sulphur?) which was dearer than normal unleaded but much cheaper than SUL or 4-star. I think it was about 2-3p a litre more than NUL.

Andy

firefox 23 October 2000 03:15 PM

Derby has had it for ages too.

ps - But I still use Esso

carl 23 October 2000 03:22 PM

Shaun,

Dunno mate. I haven't seen the pumps, which is why I asked you http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Rikki23 23 October 2000 04:26 PM

yep Sainsbury's 97 RON indeed

Filled it up for the first time on 97 last week and the difference was amazing. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

DrEvil 23 October 2000 04:29 PM

Sava Centre in Theale, does Super @ 86.5/litre!

Cool.. cheers Alex

blp 23 October 2000 04:35 PM

Sainsburys at Farlington, Portsmouth have been doing it for some time...but their pump is bust, so dont rush down!!!

Cheeky Jim 23 October 2000 05:12 PM

I will be prepared to be flamed to death on this no doubt numpty question......

Is there that much difference on SUL to normal UL??

I have been running normal UL on MY00 since I picked it up in May. I feel that the car goes perfectly well on it. What sort of difference are we talking??

Smoother? Better fuel Consumption? More Acceleration??

I just don't know!! So honest answers please to an honest question!

Jamie

carl 23 October 2000 05:42 PM

I too have a MY00 -- didn't notice any increase in 'go' with SUL although it did seem a bit smoother. No decrease in consumption either, even after four tanks, so I gave up and went back to NUL.

chelsie_uk 23 October 2000 06:29 PM

shaun
unleaded here in manchester at most garages is,
77/79 p a Litre, so cheaper then Sanisbury's.

AllanB 23 October 2000 06:32 PM

I run mine oN NUL for about 2K then thought I'd try SUL. Took about 60 miles and then the difference became noticeable. Quicker smoother pick and power tailer off far slower at high revs. Have gone back to NUL after a few tanks and you do notive the difference. Its not staggering but I think its worth is as and hesitation you might get with NUL seems to clear up.

Just what I've found. No major change in MPG, if there is any its minimal.

Kevin2000 23 October 2000 07:36 PM

There is a massive difference if you run a turbo on SUL from day one and drive it really hard compared to a car that runs on normal unleaded and is driven really softly, cant give an exact bhp figure but I have driven enough MY00 turbos to see that there is a diference.

SimonM 23 October 2000 07:50 PM

Cool http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

I hope my local Sainsburys does it... no more travelling 5 miles and paying 89.9p for me http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Mick 23 October 2000 07:54 PM

I've just filled up my second tankful of 'Super' today. No price on the ESSO billboard. Price for UL was 79.9 OKay...

Price for 'Super UL' was 89.9 http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif is this a normal differential? - or have I been conned? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

Mick

DJB 23 October 2000 08:20 PM

I bought SUL at a Sainbury's in Stirling about 2 weeks ago. Looks like its gone national.

D.

Branners 23 October 2000 09:14 PM

SUL at Savacenter in London Colney. Just off the M25 junction 22 so its almost like a service station.

I have noticed a slight performance difference between Savacenter fuel and Shell, but then the Supra is fitted with a knock sensor which retards the timing, so as it finds it doesnt like the fuel it drops the timing back a bit, and I can only tell by seat of the pants dyno....

logiclee 23 October 2000 10:10 PM

Mick,

Even bigger difference at Esso in Nott'm. Filled up today UL 77.9p, SUL 89.9p. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/mad.gif

Going back to using UL with Millers Octane Booster next week as my 20bottle order arrives Friday. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Cheers
Lee

SCOTTY 23 October 2000 10:38 PM

If a bottle of Millers OB makes 2 octane difference on 50 litres what effect would putting 2 of them in make?
The obvious answer is 4 but does it work like that and will my MY00 like it?
Could I put in NUL and 2 bottles of Millers?
In case we had another shortage I mean.

Scotty.

Tyson 23 October 2000 10:51 PM

I wouldn't get too excited...

I noticed that my local Sainsbury was selling SUL at 82.5p a couple of weeks ago http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif, then last week it was 84.5p and today it had risen to 86.5p. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif I think that they are about 1-2 weeks behind on rising fuel prices compared with the other EAGER TO RISE BP's/ESSO's/SHELL's etc.

95RON + 2 = rip-off... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/redface.gif

SimonH 23 October 2000 11:12 PM

Is there any problem with chopping and changing the fuel type you use? I've run my MY00 on SUL (even gave it some 98 in Bath the other day too) since I got it but had to fill it with UL last night http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/Gif/CHCal4.gif can't say I noticed any major difference....
Cheaper SUL would be nice though....
