Help with center diff identification!!!

I took the gearbox out this weekend to replace the center diff i thought that it was broken since when I snaped a rear shaft the car would not move at all.

I recieved a replacement viscous center diff from API, this is a STI V3 box.

When I got to the center diff it looked nothing like the viscous diff I had recieved but rather it was larger and had a set of planetary gears on the outside and sun gear ( it appeared in perfect condition). there did not appear to be any plates in it.

So it is a mechanical open center diff?? is there such a thing and can anyone tell me about it???.

When driving the front wheels seem to have some bite but most of the drive seems to be to the rear. the car feels like a rwd car most of the time.

You need to talk to David at API. He is back off holiday now.
Graham.
