Before you buy any oil...

...speak to me. I've just been quoted £72.49+vat (85.18) for a 25l drum of quality (verified by Scoobynet's own oilman) fully synthetic 5W40 oil. It's made by Fuch's who do the Silkolene brand and meets all the current specification regs for true fully synth oils. It is recommended for use by VAG, Mercedes, Ford and Renault. The guy at the store said he may even be able to do it at trade price, so it could be even cheaper, especially if we can get a mini group buy going. Even at full price with vat it would work out at under £16 per oil change (based on a 4.5l requirement). When you consider that Millers is now around £36 per 5l bottle, Silko is nearer £40 for a 4l, and Motul is even dearer I think you can see this is a bit of a bargain.

Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL, fully synthetic 5W40

ACEA A3, B3, B4
API SL/CF
VW 502.00 & 505.00
MB 229.1

Fuchs Supersyn Plus fully synthetic 5W40

ACEA A3, B4
API SL/CF
VW 500.00 & 505.00 & 505.01
MB 229.1
Ford WSS-M2C 917A

I'd appreciate your opinion on these, and perhaps a little background as to what all the numbers mean. I realise that the manufacturer ones are probably approval for use in specific vehicles or engines.

Regards,

David.

David,

Thanks for the pm.

Both of these are very good quality oils, made from PAO synthetic base stock (similar to mobil1).

The API and ACEA specs are up to date and suitable for both petrol and diesel engines.

The Fuchs Titan Supersyn Plus is also designed for the new age Diesel engines from VW.

Both very good oils.

Cheers

Guy.

Good find Dave, I haven't seen Renault recommending it though...ELF ELF ELF is all we use :D

corradoboy 04 August 2006 08:42 PM

Dan, can't check which it was as I'm at w*rk now, but one of the 2 bottles definately stated Renault amongst other manufacturers. It may be that they have approved its use but do not use it

Do we have an oil change day planned?? Might be easier to do all 5 on the same day..

Load up the dead oil in the same container
Get a discount on 5 filters
Same socket and ramps (better if we can borrow a garage lift)
5 pairs of hands...

Just an idea.. :wonder:

Let's get a final tally and then I'll see what the best deal is before we work out how everyone's paying. Can't see why PP wouldn't be acceptable though.

Right guys, spoke to the place today and the trade price gets us 25 litres of Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5W40 for £76.38. Have a look HERE to see what a bargain that is :D It works out at 5.5 oil changes from the drum and £13.75 per change

I got the impression that to get this price we would need to buy it as a single order on one invoice, so either I can collect readies from everybody and then collect it (I may need to borrow Sticky's van ;) ), or we can all meet at the place one day.

I've managed to get my next two services for free at the main stealers so won't be needing to do an oil change for a while :D

Alan C 10 August 2006 08:34 PM

Will we get this price again as I'd be happy to get another 5L?

corradoboy 10 August 2006 08:46 PM

It's their list trade price, so I would guess, barring inflationary rises then we should be able to get it again in the future. 25 litres each should last us a while though.

Alan C 10 August 2006 09:06 PM

Ah... me not reading correctly.. I thought we were getting 5L each not 25...

Anyone else made the same mistake?

white scooby 10 August 2006 10:27 PM

I did think the same! Presumed it would be one drum split between whoever is in the group buy. One of the reasons for me taking my name off, as I was the only one requiring the other oil. Other reason is as above :D:D

PAUL CRAFTS 10 August 2006 10:46 PM

That still is a bloody good deal, even if u got to buy 25lt each.:thumb:
By the way girls don't forget to pre charge your filters before u start up.
take your crank sensor off too, turn them over a few times till oil light goes off then u are ok to start.

Alan C 11 August 2006 12:03 AM

I agree it's still a steal... but best to make sure that everyones aware as there's a big difference between spending £13 and £76...

I'll ask the question.... Is 25L the minimum buy per person? Not sure I need to have 25L knocking about as that will last 2yrs. Can we buy, say, 10 now (Merc service too) and more later?

Sticky Stuff 11 August 2006 06:38 AM

I'll donate a corner of the unit if anyone needs to store any part-full drums.

It's up to you to find the bloody thing in 6 months time though :)

corradoboy 11 August 2006 12:31 PM

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I always intended to buy 25l myself as I do the Scoob every 5k, which is 2 1/2 times a year, and the Corrado once so I'd use it up in under 2 years. If any of you want to group together and share one then that's fine by me. I think we'll be OK with the price as long as I buy 3-4 25l's. 5 litre bottles are £31.10, which sort of defeats the object.

Discuss amongst yourselves who's sharing a drum and tally up the final numbers. There's no immediate rush but I'd like to sort this within the month.

Again, storage isn't a problem as I can look after it for anyone, and you will be able to find it later :D
