Urgent - CFC or HCFC in A/C ??
 

I'm importing my MY98 JDM scooby into Australia, and Aussie customs want to know what is the chemical contained in the air conditioning.

Apparently they dont allow CFC , HCFC and a third that I dont recall.

How can I find out what the A/C does contain.

well,if its a standard jap imported car and has never been regassed over here or apart from japan, its the illegal stuff,cant remember the name o fit,if its been regassed in the uk it should be the ozone friendly stuff,if in doubt,get it regassed over here uk or wherever u live that do the friendly stuff

Surely they were using R134a in 98? in which case unless the one u can't remember is HFC it's ok?
Tetrafluoroethane (R134A) is a blend component for refrigeration.
It replaces the CFC R12 (dichlorodifluoromethane) and in few years the HCFC R22 (chlorodifluoromethane).

D'oh, it's CFC, HFC, & HCFC.

I guess I have to replace the what-ever-it-is-called (coolant(?)).


Replacing - is that a major job, how many pounds ?

If it is empty, and the exporter/importer turn a/c on, will that do damage ?

Is there a fuse that can be removed, so a/c wont operate ?

Air con systems use a pressure switch which is enabled when it is gassed up. If it isn't gassed up, the pressure switch will disable the system, so no damage will be done.

Have you got the car with you in NZ or is it in Japan going to Aus?
If its with you, under the bonnet you should find a sticker with the refrigerant details on it, probably R134a.
Might be worth enquiring about, since it looks like R134a controlled rather than banned, and still used to recharge car air con.

Which did not work on my Toyota, and seized the compressor. Best to pull the fuse if empty.

Car is with me, so I can look.
When car came from UK -> NZ, customs didn't ask.

? How to ID the correct fuse, just pull one at a time I guess ?
? With ignition on, but engine not running ?

? Start with lowest rating fuse and progress upwards ?
? Or is it a 5 / 10 / 20 amp fuse ?
