Good towns/cities to live (sell it to me)

Just toying with the idea of relocating & sure i know it's about what works for me & needless to say i wouldn't just go somewhere blind but that said i'm lacking any inspiration right now.
Basics of what i'd like are bigish place with decent night life, cough women /cough ;) & entertainment quite like the idea of a coastal place although just to really get optimistic ideally not too expensive as unless there was a suitable pay increase for any new job ~£150k mortgage would be budget but anyways sell me on sum decent locations &/or add any info you care to share......

Go to Brighton if you can afford it.

Drunken Bungle Whore 20 July 2006 08:24 AM

That was going to be my suggestion too - about the only place that ticks all of those boxes.

Mind you - I'd make sure you vetted your 'women' thouroughly..... ;) :D

Trout 20 July 2006 08:41 AM

Newcastle - top ten party town, loadsa totty especially down the Quayside on a Saturday night. £150k will get you a decent house in the burbs and in the summer you can go down the coast to Whitley Bay ;) Don't forget it was a top ten global party town - alongside Rio and Sydney!! Way ahead of anywhere else in the UK!

Ok, not a glamourous as Brighton but more authentic. Brighton is a town made up of transients, cacooners (people who are from Brighton and commute to London) who never go out, daytrippers and foreign language students.

Lived there for two years and once the novelty of lots of totty wore off it was a bit dull frankly!

Rannoch :D

You could though live somewhere nearby on the coast and still reap all the benefits of B-right-on.

It's full of liberal lefty cnuts but that can work to your advantage........

My GF lives down Brighton and it is a fantastic place, loads of nightlife, restaurants (Woodies) ha ha. and Cwithh Theubank:cuckoo: The marina is a good crack as well - but it is very very expensive. 150k would possibly get you a 1 bed pokey flat - maybe best to move to Worthing (not sure about prices there) and taxi into Brighton.

She wants me to move there with her and i wont.

I live in Oldham - am i stupid or what:cuckoo:

Maybe not - lovely driving roads, villages (Saddleworth) and beer 1.50 a pint:) 3 bed detached homes for 170k and loads of sheep at your desposal

dpb 20 July 2006 09:01 AM

1.50 A PINT..? ...

darlodge 20 July 2006 09:08 AM

150k in Brighton would get you a 1 bed flat.

I live in Lancing, 8 miles west of Brighton and our 2 bed house is 170K but you can buy 2 bed with a compound garage for 150k.

It's 18 minutes on the train and a return costs £6.30. Not sure how much a taxi costs, (I normally walk in a drunken stuper) but there are late night buses

Darren

Rabid 20 July 2006 09:12 AM

With respect Lancing is a hole. Much better to live in Worthing and just get a train in.
All my friends that lived in Worthing just used to come and stay at my place after a night out.

Norwich ?

If you can look past Alan Partridge, Wurzel stereo types and other stereotypical accusations, you will find it well worth a look.

- Low crime rate
- Good value housing
- Buoyant job market
- Good nightlife
- 20 minutes from coast
- Quality of life

Would also suggest Leeds as another great underrated city.

Freak 20 July 2006 10:23 AM

Heathrow and get the first plane out of here!

watto52 20 July 2006 10:25 AM

nottingham?:Suspiciou

billythekid 20 July 2006 10:30 AM

Lancaster - low (ish) house prices - 150k will get you a nice 3 bed detached or closer to the city a nice big terraced.

You dont say how old you are but when I used to go out up there I always saw loads of girls from the Uni. :p

Oh, ok then.. and you live...... where exactly?

Yes, Nottingham has its problems, as does every other major city of its size in the world, just that Nottingham is hitting the news headlines at the moment, just as Glasgow did a few years back and Liverpool before that. And like you said yourself, worse that some parts of Manchester - meaning that most of Manchester is worse than Nottingham in general.

Coming from the city and knowing and loving it, I can honestly say that if you know where not to go, you are perfectly safe - everything is drug related, we just happen to have two areas trying to control the city, course there is going to be problems, BUT avoid those areas and honestly believe there are few places that can come close Nottingham as a place to live.

As for Lincoln, been there done that, wouldn't go back with yours mate, house prices are low for a reason. And Sheffield and Blackpool..... well, there are worse places I guess, (what is Beirut like at the moment?) but I personally wouldn't like to live there.

I'm still voting Nottingham, and no one who doesn't live here can convince me otherwise.

Which reminds me, got a house for sale if anyones interested. Nice 3 bed detached in the best area of the city to be living and for schooling.

TonyG 20 July 2006 02:43 PM

Nottingham :thumb: Two football teams as well. Not far from the Peaks, plenty of shops, good nightlife, cinemas, theatres, arenas which attract top name acts, parkland, history, a castle (er, well sort of), thr River Trent and the NWSC at Holme Pierrepont. 20 miles from Donington Park, can't beat it :D
Never seen any guns, or Yardies (but I do know where to avoid), seen the chavscum, but they're no more numerous than any other major city.

Lord Shrek 20 July 2006 02:45 PM

Nottingham has good red light districts in hyson green/lenton boulevard i suppose

me and my mate barry kerbed crawled when i was younger..i got the fat 1 and his was 8 months pregnant :thumb:

Lord Shrek.....giving reliable tourist information :thumb:

Rabid 20 July 2006 02:49 PM

Nottingham is a pretty crappy city center though isn't it? Just another urban sprawl with the same shops as every other 'main town UK'. Not doubting the beauty of the surrounding areas though, I was surprised when I first visited that part of the country that not everywhere in the 'miglands' is a ****hole. Some really beautiful places round there.

In the final analysis nowhere near cosmopolitan enough and East Midlands airport just doesn't have enough destinations from it.

That's why my suggestion of Brighton is best- Gatwick and Heathrow in easy reach, full of exotic totty and one of the highest quality party scenes going.
Never mind the food, bars and proximity to channel ports.

It has everything except economy.
