FMIC's
Ok guys and gals, i know that there's probably been loads of tests done on fmic's but i have a theory (apparently according the girlfriend i ALWAYS do things outside the box :lol1: :norty: ) but, fmic's are supposed to help cure heat soak going to the inlet, but surely with the distance the pipe is from the ic to the inlet, heat soak is inevitable. surely the shorter the distance the better !!! hence the ic being ontop op the inlet !!
ok i've had way too much vodka, but just my ten penneth :freak3: :freak3: |
But it the intercooler is at the front the air will be cooler as more can get to it. If its on top it has to go through a small scoop. And depends how long you make the pipework;)

Once the air is moving inside the pipework there is little chance of heatsoak, where as a TMIC is on top of the biggest source of heat in the engine bay.

ok i stand corrected (said the man with the orthopedic shoe)

You're correct that the long pipe runs are much more prone to heatsoak than the very short lengths involved with a top mount. However, the efficiency of the actual intercooler up front, which can not only be larger and higher flowing, but much colder in any cirumstance, more than outweighs the heat soak disadvantage of the long pipe runs. In fact it even outweighs the extra turbo lag that can be picked up with a lot of plumbing. It's not so much that a front mount on a Scoob is a particularly great way of doing things...more that the factory top mount is so poor, that it would be hard to do a worse job in terms of performance. But it's just one of many manufacturing compromises that has to be made - bottom line is it's neat, cheap and adequate for normal driving.

you can also put heat wrap on the intercooler pipes if you want it for function rather than form, it wont look as pretty under the bonnet but it will assist in keeping the heatsoak on the pipes lower
