Steering wheel change......how easy?

How easy/hard is it to put a wheel from a newage Scoob onto a classic, specifically, a '98 car with the Momo wheel?

What extra parts do I need?
Do I need to pay someone to do it, or is it DIY-able?

Sti8 wheel fits onto a my00 classic, but you have to swap the airbag connectors over. Don't know about a my98.

Will fit a MY97/8 too :D

Ive done it on my MY98 STi.I bought an STi8 wheel from someone on here and it came with the wiring ring loom thing. All i did was disconnect the battery, remove old wheel, cut the 2 airbag wires at the plug end on the old steering wheel, then cut the 2 wires on the new wheel as far away from the airbag plug on the wheel and solder new airbag plug wires to the old wires (they are the same colour on both) fit the new wheel, reconnect battery, and turn on ignition (from outside the car, just incase :D) the airbag light will go out after a few seconds like it normally does and hey presto.

Failing that im sure RON did a post with step by step pictures on how to do it

ive got a 95 scoob, but i fitted a 2001 momo with red stitching. the only difference is the conector. the old type is a three plug, but the new one is a two plug. apart from that. its a stait fit.

oh ye, the horn conection was different too.:D

Already found it and saved it on my computer.:D

Now, alls I have to do is find a wheel, and psyche myself up to do the job.

hi, ive just changed the steering wheel on mine to have the newer one on my classic, was a bit nervous when conecting the battery but it was fine, the only problem now is the air bag light is now on, does that mean the connectins are the wrong way or just the fact i need to go to a main dealer to have it re-set?

from the sounds of it, your conections are wrong. my light comes on for upto 6s then gos off. if you change the conections round and still the same prob. ask a garage. if you go to subaru about this, it will cost a lot. its £600 + from vauxhall, subaru mmm. what year is your car again

chunkee 12 July 2006 05:49 PM

it's a 98 but has the earlier dash, dunno why it's just one of those mysterys, as the wires on the new wheel were both the same i didn't think it would matter. not too good on electrics?!!!!!!!11

make sure the plug on the new wheel is pushed all the way home,i had a similar problem on mine and all i did was push hard on the plug till it clicked.
Now the airbag light goes off after a couple of seconds

you were right scooby-tc the little greem bit on the clip wasn't pushed in, all sorted now!

cheers guys
