Had your car recovered by police?

We are getting used to reports of people having their cars stolen, recovered by police and then getting hit with a huge bill for recovery. Those days could be over as a ruling in Staffordshire appears to limit the amount police can charge you for recovery to £105.

While there is likely to be an appeal against this judgment it may mean that if you have recently been charged an arm and a leg by police to have your vehicle recovered, for whatever reason, then you may be able to get all but £105 of your money back. It would certainly be well worth looking into, especially if it was an HGV as was the situation in this landmark case.

In that particular instance I would have refused to pay Staffordshire Cnutstabulary anything. I can see no valid reason for them preventing the hauliers from engaging their own recovery contractor:mad:

Nope, they just left it where they found it...

Just another contractor taking the piss.

If your car's stolen you get an offer of recovery that is the £105 mentioned.

That fee is the same if your car's found 500 miles or 5 metres from where you live.

My cousin had his X5 stolen from the driveway of his house recently.
He heard it go then called the police. 24 hours later it was found in Windsor.
They requested to hold it for 24 hours (finger printing?) then told him he could come and collect it from his local station. They charged him £120.00 for 'recovery & storage'.

About 10 years ago my manta was stolen. When I reported it missing the police asked me if I wanted it recovered if they found it, I answered no because I have breakdown cover for that thanks.

A few hours later I got a call at home from the police saying we've found your car sir and we're recovering it. I told them that I didn't want it recovered but they didn't listen so we jumped in the car and drove the short journey to where the car was found but they'd gone  It was the following day before I could see my car again

When I asked them why they'd recovered it which was against my wishes they said it was so that they could do forensic tests on it and that they'd pay the recovery bill because of this. I still wasn't happy but left it at that because I couldn't get my car back.

A couple of days later they called me to collect my car and told me the bill was over £150 and they wouldn't release the car until I paid it  At that point I wasn't even earning that a week :( After a lot of arguing with them they agreed to release my car to me
