At last the Mk2 16V is ready for some fun

Inspired buy Olly finally getting his 205 back on the road, I've decided to put some elbow grease into my acquisition of last year:D

The eagle eyed amongst you will spot the new owner of it's original rims in the first photo:)

Next job is to get these two back up to the same standard

And just for good measure, and to keep Olly happy, a picture of the car I went to my wedding in:thumb:

Nice mk2:thumb: , tbh i think i'd prefer the original bbs on the golf and the golf wheels on the 5.

Would like a nice mk2 but they seem to fetch such a high premium for a nice example.

Yeah but you've got to bear in mind that the Golf is mine & the MX5 is MrsD's. Hence the ball aching job of keeping the wheels clean is no longer mine:D

PS I spoke to soon about her being ready for some fun, the seals in the power steering rack have decided to start leaking in a big way:( Don't you just love old cars:)

rb5_336 09 July 2006 10:24 PM

ah! you gotta love mk2's..here's mine...

Rare sight nowadays a decent MK2, sold my last one that we had from new for a Fiat Coupe Turbo which was nowhere near as much fun and a bit of a pain in the arse, I love the MK1 more but realistically a MK2 is still pretty usable as an only car wheras a Mark 1 isnt.

They just look a bit anaemic now hot hatches have > 200 bhp, but probably as much fun.

Yeah but how many weight just 1000kgs :) Most hot hatches these days are no faster really. There's 15 years of progress for you :)

How true, mine can hold it's own against a lot of more modern machinery:thumb: It also gets a lot more admiring looks too:D

On the PAS side, one of the rigid pipes on the rack itself has split:( VAG don't do them as a separate part, you have to buy a complete rack assembly, at £762+VAT:eek::mad:

I'm now on the lookout for someone who can make me a replacement hydraulic pipe up, anyone?

Nice Mk2
Oak Green as well :)
Used to get lots of looks in mine as well. As it was mint inside and out - quite a rare sight these days. Sold it when I went to Germany.

The rack went on mine too. Got a new one fitted for 500. Cheap for a rack - but a big big bill for an old car. Unlike many parts which you can pick up from the breakers - its not worth putting a second hand rack on.

Cheers:) Funnily enough, I always prefered them in Atlas Grey, but this tidy unmolested one was to good an opportunity to miss, and the colour is growing on me:D

The really annoying thing is there is feck all wrong with the rack, it's just the banjo unions on the pipes that have rotted:( I think I've got it sorted now though, a guy I know who works for a forklift dealers is going to have a look through his parts collection for me tomorrow:)

Harty2000 13 July 2006 07:34 PM

I love mk2 GTI's. I had one for 3 years before I had the scoob and wish I could have kept it.

Cheap cars to run and loads of fun to be had. Dont think i'll ever get a minter again but wouldnt mind a cheap one to knock about in

Edit- sorry about size, it doesnt seem to want to resize

Oak Green 'valver - Mmmm... Lovely :thumb:

Always wanted one in that colour (specially a 3 door). After getting shut of a Lhasa Green MK1 GTi, I ended up with an Atlas Grey one, back then the Oak Green were fairly rare :(

With regard to the wheels, I do like the ones that are on (are they Bourbet C's?) but personally if you're not going to have the original BBS alloys, I think the ultimate wheels are the Azev A's

If you come to sell it btw... please do get in touch.

Well spotted Jay, yes they are Borbets, I always wanted a set on my first Mk2 many moons ago, but couldn't afford them:( I found these on the internet marvel that is e-bay:thumb:

Funnily enough, the car may be coming up for sale soon, along with most of the rest of the Duk fleet, and the Anfield season ticket:( as I have been offered a very tempting employment opportunity on the other side of the world:)

Jay_bee 13 July 2006 11:08 PM

*whispers* season ticket... Anfield you say???? Hmmmm VERY interesting!

Ha ha, I know exactly what you mean about wanting a set but not being able to afford them... I wanted a set for my MK1 but didnt have the pennies, thats how I knew what they were straight away... and that was nearly 9 years ago :lol1:

Tell you what, the state this place (the country, not SN... although saying that..) is in, I'd love to be off. Just set up a business so need to get that working so I can sell it and get out of this place before full meltdown occurs!!

Anyway.. if you do make the move, give me a shout and I may very well take the Golf off your hands (and depending on what you'd be after for the season ticket - that too ;))

Jeff.

I'll PM you when a decision is made, re; the Golf:)

You've got no chance with the ticket, my father and two of my cousins are fighting over it already:) and I've not even decided whether I'm going yet:)

Jay_bee 13 July 2006 11:32 PM

Well, to be fair, Id have been mightily suprised if you hadnt already got a queue of people lined up for the ticket but as the saying goes, if you dont ask you dont get.

Ok, no probs on the Golf. First dibs at it then :thumb:

PS. Go on, bog off :D

CrisPDuk 08 October 2006 01:46 AM

Well the employment opportunity has come up, and the golf's for sale for offers in the region of £1900 if anyones interested.
It's not on the Borbets anymore, I'm keeping them coz I'll definitely be getting another golf when I come home:D The original BBS's back on with a set of new Pirelli P5000's

CrisPDuk 08 October 2006 01:46 AM

PS Jay bee YHPM:thumb:

Oh. A Mk2 Valver thread :D

Mine (also Oak Blue under all the dirt) which I sold earlier this year to a chap in Ireland http://www.petewymer.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/IMG_1611.jpg

Steve Whitehorn 06 June 2007 09:42 PM

Diehard classic subaru fanatic I may be.
But I have a real soft spot for Mk2s
My last one. I took back to as near to mint showroom condition as I could.
Alot of frustration and trips to breakers but a real sense of achievement once I had it finished.
A real head turner in a nice way. People used to come and look at it when you parked it up - as it was a bit of a trip back in time, a proper classic :)
