lcd 32" widescreen in 4:3 mode...

have the 32" LG 32LX2R. in 4:3 it puts grey vertical strips on the left and right.

is there any way to change these to black? it's really distracting.

(connecting via HDMI and PC/VGA-DVI - happens to both)

Should be in your picture menu. My panasonic has off and 3 levels of sidebar lighting. Detail probably buried in the manual somewhere.

Try ringing LG Customer Services in Slough ................ if you want a laugh at their utter crappiness!!! :D :D :D

LG are REALLY bad at Customer Service!! Do NOT buy LG!!

How to fix your picture - I don't know, sorry!

you can via the service menu, this is taken from a post on AVForums:-

http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=231563

Googleing for the service menu, it turns there're two main ways to access it in LG LCD TVs. The first one is pressing Menu in the remote for about 5 seconds until the screen asks for a 4 digit password. None of the passwords I gathered worked. Why I'm explaining this? Because this method interferes with the one that works:

Press Menu on both the remote and the TV (the standard menu will appear) for about 4/5 seconds and, as soon as you see the standard menu dissappear, stop pressing the keys, else the service menu will be there only for a split second, because the TV will ask now for a password, thanks to the first method. It took me 5 or 6 tries to get the timing right.

Once there, using the remote arrow buttons go to Panel Control and press OK. Go to Blank Color and press Left or Right to choose between Gray or Black. The change is inmediate. Press Exit to, erm, exit the service menu.

by the way, great picture through HDMI and DVI - really crisp and good contrast with deep blacks. also handles really well on fast action too :)
