household ins claim

seing another thread on here got me thinking

ok horrible if it ever happened but should we get burgled.......

we prob dont have any receipts for all our stuff, by a few peoples standards is not worth a lot but to us its everything, tv dvd laptop digi camera etc etc and also a expensive gold bracelet that we told them about and had to pay extra because worth 4k (got a valuation cert with that tho)
just a q on the bracelet they said its covered for use outside the home etc?

my friend said they wouldnt pay me anything because theyd just think i was making things up to claim for and trying my luck?

the thought of loosing it all is bad enough but the thought of not having it replaced if something did happen is even worse?

direct line we are insured with

Takes some piccies for a starter and keep them away from house...... dl

just make a list of all items worth over , say £100, and a digi pic of each. 5 min job and your done.

should add...direct line are superb, i have had to claim on various things with them over the years and every time they have bent over backwards to help and NEVER quibbled over valuations or anything else.

only yesterday i had to call as the dishwasher has leaked over the kitchen floor........flooring comp due in the morning to replace the lot!!!!!

Why would your friend say that? He thinks people can't claim insurance on valuables?

If you are burgled, mugged, or happen to lose the bracelet in the river whilst skinny dipping, and you have a crime reference number (may be hard to get one for the latter example!) and you tell the insurance company these items were stolen / lost, do you really think the insurance company will start laughing and tell you you're a crap liar???

They wouldn't be in business long! If you have informed the insurance company, the item in question is listed on your policy as you pay an extra premium, and you have a certificate of value, then you are obviously as covered as you can be and unless there are obviously suspicious circumstances you will have no issues in the unfortunate event of a claim.

By suspicious circumstances I mean getting a valuation, adding it to the policy on Wednesday, and then "losing it" on Friday! ;)

What you get will depend on your insurance policy. If it's worth more that £1000 then on most policies it needs to be specifically listed as a valuable item, then you'll get whatever you insured it for (with some caveats). If it's worth £4K and you haven't recorded it, you'll get the £1K max or whatever.

I suspect then, they'd offer you the cash.
