what makes these cherished plates worth so much?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-SSC-PRIVATE-...QQcmdZViewItem
£25,000 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/33-DBC-PRIVATE...QQcmdZViewItem £15,000 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WAP-55-number-...QQcmdZViewItem £4500.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PAM-61-number-...QQcmdZViewItem £11200... i am thinking of selling mine and havnt been able to get a valuation yet. i had a look on ebay and wondered what makes the plates worth £££'s :thumb: |
From the looks of those prices there having a fookin giraffe! :lol1:
|
Being "dateless" and having a name or letters of someone's name. shorter ones seem to be worth more as do plates with a meaning. ie X5, 911 etc
|
i want to put mine on ebay but i dont know what to set the reserve at.
so you dont think they will sell for the money asked?:wonder: |
The first 2 are way over priced. Would be very suprised & shocked if they went for that, as they don't spell anything i.e "P1 LOT"
TBH, I don't know why people pay so much for a plate what has no meaning to anyone apart from themselves. One of my mate paid £3k about 15 years ago for "51 ***" and he swears it worth about £9k ?? Yeh, only if a person with the same initials want's to spend that much on a plate. Each to their own of course. Just my opinion |
At the end of the day they are only worth what someone will pay, it's ok putting it up for 25000 but will it sell?
Don't bother with a reserve you can always pull the auction if it does not get up to what you want. Anyway there are always other ways to get the price up....so i'm told |
I paid 250 quid for my username/reg
|
3 SSC may be worth a lot to old Jag enthusiasts - they started out as The Swallow Sidecar Company - changed their name after WWII when SS took on a whole new meaning.
I'm sure there are better ways to blow £25k mind! |
The lack of bids suggests to me that the rest of the world don't value those plates as highly as the current owners!
|
People always try their luck with number plates. I bought S23 WRX for £250 from the DVLA for my 1st scoob and left it on the car when I sold it about 3 years and now the car's for sale again with a "private plate worht £1900"! I don't think so.
In my opinion, of the links posted, I think PAM 61 would get the most money - I would value 3 SSC, 33 DBC and WAP 55 at all under £5000 (they'd certainly get no more at a DVLA auction, where you can get things like 47 AD for £4000). Your plate HI GHV is quite different - at a guess, and without trying to offend, I'd say £2000 tops. |
a few years ago i was offered over £10,000 for mine but i wasnt selling it at the time, i spose if its worth something to the buyer then it can be worth anything :)
i am too scared to put mine up for sale incase i kick myself later:freak3: as the new reg plates make it very difficult to spell something i was thinking that plates would go up in value :p |
it would be interesting to find out what people actually paid for their plates rather than what they are up fpr sale for :thumb:
|
You would be amazed and some of prices plates make now adays.
Ive got 2 and they have not been advertised, yet i still get people offering me thousands for them. Only last year i was offered over £30k for one of them. Ive no idea how or where they get my phone number from, but the offers come rolling in. Only last month I had a dealer call me about the other plate. Madness, but a good profit if i wanted to sell. |
Sarasquares, you can if they where bought at a DVLA auction.

Remember, a plate is only worth what someone will pay for it - hence the reason why those overpriced ones on eBay have no bids!!
Offered £10K!!!! I would have bitten there arm off for that!! |
|
3 SSC sold for £3100 in 2001. The others haven't gone through DVLA's auctions.
I stand by my earlier comment re price now. |
HICKS went for £13,000  sold in sept '91 :eek2:
|
I have no idea sara, your's is much better :thumb:
|
One of the soldiers in Aliens bought it.......
|
HIGGY, £15,000 sold in 1991
H1 FLY £9000  H1 LDA £27,000  sold in 1990 i might ask more for mine now :D |
@sarasquares, you may get a good price from a dyslexic HGV driver :lol1:

i'm trying to source a plate for my other half's 40th birthday next year as a surprise.
would like the number 40 in it somewhere, along with derivatives of his name ( Pete) or his initials.. PJH ...or... something to do with his bike (ZX10R) or possibly something to do with his car (Civic type R) Have tried doing a search, but can't just find the right one at the mo:( |

I found it much easier to change my name to W434 UHN :D
and a lot cheaper too :D |
Mother-in-law used to have 1 MMF on her E-type back in the day, MMF being her initials. Got quite a sum for it I believe.
