Good driving roads in Cornwall
 

Hi all

Am going down to Cornwall at the weekend, can anyone recommend any good driving routes down there? I'll be pitting my WRX Wagon, with powerstation power upgrade, against my mate's M Roadster, so twisty stuff would be good ;-)

Hi, I live in Truro and drive to the Lizard every day. Basically any road that isn't the A30 is probably bendy, coast road from Padstow to Newquay would be good. Have a good time.

Any of them not in Saltash! unless you like speed bumps the size of elephants :D

The A39 Atlantic Highway has a good variance of corners. Some good straights with sweeping bends and some really fun twistier bits, especially between St. Kews Highway and Camelford. The A30 over Bodmin is a lovely open dual carriageway, but is littered with (s)camera vans hoping to make a fast buck from the tourists. If you make it as far north as Bude then drive the A3072 to Holsworthy and then north on the A388. One of my favourite corners in England is along there. A beautiful gradual sweeping right rise up to a crest with a 90º left over the blind brow and a sweeping right back down to a tightening right into some trees. Aim for 70 or so through the 90º left and into 3 figures through the rest :D Come all the way back down the A388 afterwards to Launceston to pick up the A30.
There's plenty of great little backroads, but many of them are too tight with too little visibility to get any serious speed.
Keep bang on the limit through any camera signed villages (well, all villages actually) and be wary for a mile either side of any other camera sign (IIRC they have to be within 1500 metres). Best bet if you're gonna be challenging each other :nono: is to drive the chosen stretch of road through at a steady pace and check for danger first. If all's clear, go for it :D

Went down there many many years ago when I had a Fiesta XR2 and managed to find this quiet toll road (5p in the bucket!) which was fantastic.

Will see if I can remember where it was again.

i used to live in Newquay about 5 years ago and always loved the coastal route from newquay haeding north past Bedruthian steps, very tight and twisty especially exiting from Watergate!

The coast road from St Ives to St Just is great (B3306 I think ) lots of twists and turns and hills , no speed cameras outside of the villages, just watch out for the coach coming around the bend the other way :D . Oh and fantastic views too . http://www.urban75.org/photos/stives/stives322.html
