Golf R32
 

Morning All

Have a WRX ppp at the moment. Might trade up for a STi PPP.

But.... still looking at the Golf R32 - seems a good package?

Any comments / thoughts?

Nice car but it'll seam slow in comparison to a STI ppp. :)

It will as above. I have a STI PPP, so guess which way I went:wonder:
May hold value more though:confused:

will hold value better imo and be a a more solid car overall, but slow compared to the sti PPP!

A ppp'd WRX would struggle to shake an R32 and an STi would not disappear too far down the road either :p

I dragged against one at York in my 246bhp Gtir (R32 has 250 I think) I beat him by nearly 1.5secs. He did a 14.4 which is respectable, but sorry, I class it as slow too.

Main problem is they weigh around 1475-1500kg.

IIRC they are 1510 kg which doesn't help.
My MY99 PPP Wagon is said to be 1270 kg

Mk5's are even worse. 1580kg for the manual and 1617kg for DSG according to this...

On a dragstrip things are a little bit different to the real world. Granted an STi PPP will be quicker, but it won't hand the golf it's arse :)

I don't think the R32 is significantly better than the new gti for the money

I think it's universally agreed by motoring journalists that the GTI is the better car.

I doubt it, my STI is poor below 3500 rpm then all hell breaks loose. I drove an R32 demo model earlier this year and my ST felt lardy when I got back in. Lets face it the performance one needs in the real world is between 30 and 80 mph on A/B roads, exactly where the STI is out of its depth unless you want to be stirring that gear knob like it was your own :D

I would go for the R32, especially as it will be worth double an STI in 2 years. Couple that with the Chav image Subaru now has and it clenches it for me :luxhello:

They sound amazing !

What relevance does that have for the road:wonder: ,who is going to drag race on the road?forget the 0-60 times,1/4mile times people go on about,forget what motoring journalists say,take one for a drive,and make your own judgement!

The figures are not as good for the R32 as the STi but the R32 would be a more rounded package.

It also doesn't look like a bad accident in the Ripspeed dept of Halfords ;)

I have an STI but also like the Old golf R32. (Think the new one looks to soft).

I don't think your be making a bad choice with either.

Friend has a R32 golf, nice car, like Steve Sherwen said its a nice all round package.

He adjusted the cams, played with the engine as performance wise, it was always a little un-rewarding and never lived up to its looks. He managed to get it up to 280odd bhp using different cams etc, but then had a turbo installed. Had to go over to a company in Holland or Belgum. That took it too around 340bhp which made the car the perfect weapon.

I would certainly have one, but more as a steady cruiser / long distance ride, than a sports car.

340hp was nice, until he blew his engine :-(.

Having a twin turbo supra myself, I did worry about the car's reliablity, especially regarding to whether the engine would run lean at the top end, if the turbo boost was raised too high,. Well, eventually the engine said good bye and left on the drive from from Norfolk.

I would of left the car alone, may be left it with the up rated cams etc i.e 270-80 bhp, I certainly wouldnt of gone the turbo, as this type of conversation is just too difficult to keep reliable. But, he did his research and found a company that had installed a turbo before and `Nothing ventured, nothing gained` , went and got it done.

Hind sight is all very well now, but my feelings are that you dont buy a chicken and try to turn it into a duck. The car cost him £23K, he's spent a good £15K on it now, but the car is now broken and needs an engine.

My heart goes out to him, as he's a lovely guy, and like me, he's car mad, and doesnt deserve this to happen to him. He spent big money, using `professional` tuners, but found problems which these guys should of fixed etc. Lets just say that his blown engine certainly isnt down to him being cheap and trying to cut corners.

Perhaps he should of brought something more suitable in the first place, like a porsche or evo / sti. But, moving forward, the guy will get it fixed, and no doubt the car will be the dogs balls again. If you could rewind time, Im sure he would of saved his money and just gone out and brought an Audi Rs4 !

Have driven the new R32, currently have a TSL STI MY05 no comparision, the subaru is by far the better drivers car. If your criteria is holding some residual value, all round build, and a supposed cleaner image get the golf, if you want a grin on your face and want a thrill ride get the scoob pretty simple choice in my book.

LMAO :D Scoobynet just gets better and better. First vtec is outlawed for being supposidly useless in the mid-range blasts and now 2.0l turbo cars are no use from 30-80mph!?!? :confused: I guess we should all be driving 4.5 V8's then, yes? :rolleyes:

Well here's a novelty, a post from someone that actually owned one, plus had an 02 STi UK PPP ;)

My R32 was AmD tweaked, 272bhp, and Milltek exhaust. I ran it for around 15 months, nothing went wrong, nothing fell off, and it was good fun to drive.
I had it on track at Goodwood twice and it was an effective track car plus loads of comments on how good it sounded - cross between an M3, 911 and Nascar :D

I never felt it was inferior to the STi, and at least had less Chavness about it ;)

In the real world of everyday use, i'd recommend one :)

r32 272BHP VS STI PPP (Probably running 300bhp max!) Of course the R32 wouldn't feel inferior!!!

It obviously wasn't as quick as an STi PPP (and mine with a few exhaust bits left in the garage ;) was probably around 310bhp) nor close torque wise, but it's my contention having had a few quickish cars now that for one to have a noticeable advantage over another (assuming similar weight etc) there has to be getting on for 50bhp/50ft/lb difference between them or it is marginal :)

Which is why my Forester 2.5 XT PPP has to be replaced by a FSTi PPP next time around :D (261bhp/280ft/lb vs 338bhp/330ft/lb for Litchfield sports pack)

I have got a MY05 WRX PPP and love it .... but if I could afford the new R32 I would probably look at one! 4WD and a V6 appeals in a body the size of the Golf.

Yes, it may be slightly slower on paper but they are mighty quick and it is all useable power. I would go for the DSG gearbox as I live on the outskirts of London and traffic is terrible ...... I really don't think you would notice any difference in the real world; infact, as I say, the power is likely to be more useable.

Having had a slightly soft V6 4motion for 3+ years I like the Golf. The thought of a quicker and slightly more modern version appeals. I like the understated looks - relatively speaking - compared to say an STi.

The only thing is the image is possibly 'estate agent come good' but then, the Scooby doesn't exactly have the greatest image.

I would also look at a BMW 130i ...... not too many about, more q-car and certainly quick. I would just avoid the sport version unless you like rock hard suspension and jumping all over the road tramlining (that being my own personal experience of a 'sport' BMW!). The rwd should be more amusing than the 4wd in some ways but I found BMW spoil any fun by having overactive T/C.
