TURBO NOISE ON MY05WRX

Have said car above with ppp, anyone else experience a noise which i can hardlt describe as a sort or crackling / rampant tapping noise when the turbo spools up, it normally clears after 4000rpm or do you have a sweet turbo spool up noise

just curious as mine has seemed to lack power ever since i got it and comapred it to my previous MY95 WRX import!

cheers

Mickey

Im pretty sure mine makes the same noise yours does m8, i wouldnt worry.

Stainy 14 June 2006 09:59 PM

mine does it too, thought it was knock when I bought the car. Think it's actually the solenoid on the turbo

darren... 14 June 2006 10:27 PM

I don't get anything like that on mine - how loud is it?

MickeyWRX 20 June 2006 02:50 PM

not too loud but it sounds a bit embarrasing as you rive through a town centre with the nice burble and its ruined by the ticking noise, i have to have the windows down to hear it but am going to subaru on friday so they can hear it but i guess i'll probs be fobbed off!

MickeyWRX 20 June 2006 02:51 PM

there have been a few posts saying it could be the solenoid on the turbo as its always had a weird noise on low rev spool up which clears after 4000rpm!

jasonius 20 June 2006 08:17 PM

05 wrx and nope, no ticking on spoolu-up I'm afraid..!;)

T123VOR 20 June 2006 08:56 PM

05 wrx and no ticking on spool-up either:wonder:

MickeyWRX 22 June 2006 04:40 PM

do you guys have a clear spool up noise like a jet engine winding up for instance?

LeeRsti 22 June 2006 05:03 PM

I have the same noise on my 04sti when the turbo spools up between 2000-3000rpm.My previous sti did not do it.
Have taken it to the dealer but they say that they can not hear it.
Like you say you can hear it mostly around town.

Bat-Fink 22 June 2006 05:05 PM

heatshield?

LeeRsti 22 June 2006 05:11 PM

The dealer did check my heatshields and said they are ok.
(If i can trust them)

Got a similar noise on my 06wrx between 2000-3000rpm. Had it in at a dealer on tuesday and they spoke to Subaru technical who said that it was ok. The dealer are getting another 06 WRX in to compare mine against as they agree it doesn't sound right. Hopefully they'll get it sorted in the next week or two

LeeRsti 23 June 2006 11:41 AM

Can you tell us how you get on & if they can find the problem.

wilb 23 June 2006 11:43 AM

My 04 WRX sounds like a jet engine, no knocking noise on mine.

RJL_WRX05 23 June 2006 11:45 AM

No noise on my WRX 05 PPP.

MickeyWRX 23 June 2006 05:03 PM

i can hear it mostly down country lanes or around town, its a slightly faint noise but its definatly there, was due to be at suabru today but had to put it off and anyway iam just expecting them to take it in for a few hours waste my day off without a car and then get it back being told theres nowt wrong with it!

sad when you pay your hard earned and once they have it they couldnt give a toss

MickeyWRX 26 June 2006 08:55 PM

am hoping that if they cant find it it might go away after my 10,000 miles service!

hopefully!

Jamesemt 26 June 2006 09:01 PM

Mine started doing it after the remap - if its the same, I think it sounds pretty good :D

EVOLUTION 26 June 2006 11:04 PM

I just get lots of whistling on mine and I've gone thru' standard, PPP and Decat states of tune. A cracking noise on spooling up doesn't sound normal to me. If you'd said after turning off the car then fair enough. Could be heat shield either for the turbo or even the downpipe. If it is solenoid then it's not a normal noise and perhaps there is a batch of cars with this problem.

rob84 31 August 2006 11:42 PM

could be blown up pipe my car had this got it changed and noise has gone its a comon problem

No noise on my WRX 05 PPP either

wrxseeker 01 September 2006 09:35 AM

Mine used to sometimes make a noise on spool up - a kind of tinkling. Reminds me of the sound of "pinking" but I wouldnt have said it was loud enough to hear from outside.

Did it on optimax/tesco99/SUL but never noticed it in town - only foot down hard on open road.

Havent noticed it lately (or my ears have tuned it out)

(Std 05 WRX)

Try tightening up all the hoses from the airbox through to the intercooler. Had the same sort of noise and it seems to have done the trick. Some of the jubilee clips were a little loose.

Had exactly the same as you described on my WRX300. Also haven't noticed it recently and now sounds more like a jet engine when on boost. Cars done 9k miles now though so wondered if something has worn in or dropped off!

wrxseeker 01 September 2006 03:02 PM

My cars done 11k now so maybe something "beds in" in the turbo/exhaust area after a few miles.

Definately has losened (sp?) up a bit too.

MickeyWRX 02 September 2006 03:03 PM

right yeah im up to 9300 miles at the mo and i havent been checking for a while now but i havent heard it for a bit, maybe it was just something bedding in, will try later and listen for it!

LeeRsti 16 October 2006 05:01 PM

I have been running tesco 99 fuel for the last year and it has made this noise all the time.
I`ve just run a tank full of shell v power in my car and the noise has gone.

Mine does make a noise like a helicopter starting up but i assumed this was normal as it is only during spool up and was the turbine itself, and you can only here it if you are going slowly through the revs at normal driving speeds. Is this the sound you are talking about?:wonder:
