NAS and Wireless Media Streaming
Does anyone have any recommendations for devices in this area?
I'm looking to add some sort of NAS device to my network and use it to store all my music, photos, videos etc and then intregrate this into the TV/home-cinema setup in the lounge using a media streaming device. Products I had in mind are the D-Link DSM520 which offers HDMI output and so appears quite futureproof, and one of the Maxtor Shared Storage devices. http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=41JS http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=3XT5 Has anyone setup such a system - anyone have any advice? TIA Gary. |
ASs regards NAS, I have a Buffallo Linkstation (250gb). It runs a small version of Linux and can be customised if necessary.
But it's Upnp ready out of the box, easy to setup and a fair few features. I'm very happy. |
If your going for NAS why not go for the netgear one, ok you don`t get hard drives so you have to buy your own, but if you put 2 in then you have a mirrorred pair so keeping your data safe if one does fail. Nothing worst than loosing all 500Gb of data just because of drive failure etc.

I've got one of these things attached to my network

Interface could be a bit better going to add one of these for storage when I get a bit of spare cash... http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=2559 |
I quite fancied a NAS for media stuff, just ended up using an old PC I had around with a big disk in it and a wireless card, I had the disk, I had the PC so why not apaprt from it being a bit bigger than I wanted, might stick Linux on it as Microsoft seem to be objecting to my special licensing agreement wherby I buy one XP disk and put it on all my pc's !

Microsoft seemed to object to me not buying any XP licensing and putting it on all my pc's and my families pc's too :D I had a piece of software once that allowed you to disagree to the licensing terms, but could still install the software :D |
I want my streamer to access ISOs as this is what my DVDs are stored as, a lot of them don't but this one does the job very nicely:

Thanks for the replies. Looks asthough I had a few options. I was originally considering the Netgear device until I discovered it was Windows only.
