Yeah, been look at the XFX XXX version to replace my XFX 7800 XXX 512.. but common sense might rule! Although the new Dell 2407 looks tempting too... not really a stealth buy then thou - the misses will notice the monitor! :D

DrEvil 07 June 2006 02:46 PM

Looks like G80 won't be around until late Q4'06 or early Q1'07... not confirmed, but rumoured so far... nuts... hmm.. GX2.. ;)

Doh! good point :D

I need a new case for my gaming system anyhow - the Tsumami i have just doesn't pump enough air through it and is extremely cramped - thought I might just chuck this card in the order as well... ;) We'll see.....

BTW anyone tried the Dell 2407 yet??? it looks good for widescreen BF2 :)

DrEvil 08 June 2006 02:10 PM

I'll report back on the performance of the card, ordered the XFX XXX version today, should arrive Saturday all being equal!

Iain Young 08 June 2006 03:24 PM

Are there actually any games that will use the extra performance yet though? I've yet to find anything that will even begin to stretch my sli 7800s...

lightning101 08 June 2006 03:34 PM

Whats that got to do with it :lol1: Overkill is whats needed

DrEvil 08 June 2006 03:46 PM

I find the 7800GTX512 cannot handle the likes of Condemned and FEAR with full eye candy, and course Oblivion.... hence the upgrade, seeing as I can't source a second 7800 512 new now, figured I'd change it for one of these.

The GX2 is effectively an SLI'd pair of high speed 7900GT (well my version is) in one card.

As Lightning says - you can never have too much power, overkill is the key to gaming rigs :D

Iain Young 08 June 2006 03:52 PM

Ah. I run fear etc at 1600x1200 with everything ramped up to max and everything runs fine, but I guess the 7800GTX512s in SLI are helping there ;)

I might wait for the next iteration of cards I think. I haven't got bottomless pockets these days... :)

EddScott 08 June 2006 03:56 PM

The cards are just 2 7900GTs strapped together. And I think the 1024RAM is still split 512/512.

I have a 7800GTX and was going to source another GTX from Ebay to SLI them but even then I'm not that convinced its worth it for me as my CPU is an AMD 3700 which I think will cause a bottle neck with these 7950s.

some people just enjoy new advances to much! :thumb:

I remember back a good few years ago when the geforce 2 ultra came out and I spent over £400 on a creative one. They were the good old days when i could keep up with technology.

Exactly, you're already SLI'd - which is effectively all I'm doing :)

SLI/Crossfire does make a big difference with newer titles. :)

Quite - always fun getting hold of the latest and greatest to mess about with... reminds me, gotta get a PR raised for the new BL25p's.

Yep, 2x 7900GTs with 512Mb each, as you say they strapped together - but the XXX has each 7900 core overclocked to 570/1550.

My X2 4800 will be some what of a bottle neck - but this card will increase the MIN frame rate never the less, up the average obviously.

I thought you already were sli'd, hence the confusion ;)

DrEvil 08 June 2006 04:53 PM

Nah, couldnt justify it at the time... ;)

But felt in the mood for a change... just hoping Nv release the official drivers soon.

jpor 08 June 2006 05:17 PM

The way things are going, this new fandangled card will get superceded next week. :lol1:

Yeah, ATi have X1950XT(X) pencilled in for Sept now.

Nvidia's next big release is G80 - due end of Q4, early Q1'07.

The GX2 will keep me ticking over for another 6 months ;)

As soon as you buy anything these days you're already behind the times!

jpor 08 June 2006 07:19 PM

Ah well I'm sticking with the good old AGP technology. They seem to have slowed down now. :thumb:

Wouldn't you have been better changing to sli'd 7900gtx's then? only a couple of hundred more than you've just thrown at the 7950gtxxxx :)

jaytc2003 08 June 2006 10:04 PM

i thought the 7950 was actually the 7900gtx and not 2 7900gt

Nope, but the only real difference is clock speed. And the XXX is 570/1550 x2 - so should be ok ;)

And I really can't justify a h/w refresh for GPUs to the tune of 1000 quid (XFX XXX versions - just a must buy! :D)

Compat mobos: http://www.nvidia.com/content/geforce_gx2_sbios/us.asp

Damn... that VP2030B is looking tempting ...

lightning101 09 June 2006 08:16 AM

I'd like to know when nvidia will manage a chip that matches the radeons for video playback

ATi is so smooth and non-pixelated, nvidia is blocky and jerky by comparison right across its range :(

IQ seems to be better on ATi, although I must confuse comparing like for like - I don't notice it personally.

Anyhowz... after reading the Anandtech review on these, placed an order for the VP2030B TFT this morning :)
