Is this MY99 too much?
Looking at a 99 wagon which has PPP, It also has the Prodrive handling pack and only 28,000 miles on the clock!
Its exactly the car I want with a great mileage (although would prefer a 2000/2001, however he is asking for 7.5K. Has indicated he may go down to 7K at a push but as a dealership has apparently offered something in this region already so no lower. I have been e-mailing him regularly for the last week or two trying to persuade him that he is asking for too much but he seems pretty set on his asking price. I might just about go up to 6.5K but thats pushing it. Checked with my mechanic and compared on Autotrader which both concur with my feelings but what about you guys? Any advice from the more experience much appreciated... Or anyone know any other 99 onwards PPP wagons for 5-6K? Cheers Ps - going to see the car at the weekend to speak to him face to face about this. He or someone who knows him may very well read this post but I aint saying anything here I havn't already said to him. Just posting on another forum as I cant access the other one from work for some reason. |
I think the 28,000 miles is a just reason for his asking price. There aren't many classics with that kind of mileage around anymore.
I just paid £5700 on a UK Turbo 1999 s reg, stage one mods, very clean and with only 50k on the clock. And full service history. To be honest I think 7K is a reasonable price. |

offer him 6.5k when you see him if that is all you want to pay, he can only say no. If he does, go & look for an other one. If you can't find one then pay him what he wants or give up with it.

I Bought a MY00 'X' Reg Classic Saloon with 25k for 7k a few months ago.
I was very pleased with this price. Better than other cars of a similar age but with higher mileage. Mine did come with 9 months Subura warranty though :) |
If its a UK Car, 1 or 2 owners, if seller is selling after owning for more than 1 year, Full Service History and in good condition considering its age, then.... I would say ...
BUY IT!!!! Genuine Imprezas do not come along all that often - most are fooked about with, lots are crappy Imports, this one may well be that rare beast ...... a top UK car!!! and the best costs, always has, always will (but be MILES cheaper in the mid term!) Pete |

That is excellent mileage! If its low mileage you are after you are going to pay a premium.
Pay a bit more for a nice clean car to start off with and then you will save over the years of ownership. Vicki :D |
Personally i would keep away...the mileage is little worrying for a car of its age. :confused: I just bought a STI on a 2003 Plate with 35K on the clock..
How many owners has the car had? Has the car been stored away for a long period of time? Make sure you look for damadge and resprays on the car. And whatever you do, do not buy the 1st car you see...hunt around. Waggons generally tend to be cheaper the Saloons. I sold MY98 with 60K for £4750 near 6 months ago. Also you have a pm... |
IMO I think £7.5k is not bad! Believe it or not they are still sort after cars. I bought a 99 wagon (no PPP) a year ago for £6.5K with 50k miles, I thought this was not a bad buy, and as far as I can tell they have not gone down in value that much, if you get it for £7k you are getting a bargain, especially with all the prodrive goodies

Though what makes you think the mileage has not been tampered with? :cuckoo: Its a gamble really...unless you know what wear and tear you are looking for for when you go to buy a car of that mileage...

The smell of the car was enough to corroborate the milage- it still had that new car scent to it, documents and inspection all served to confirm as did owner's (mid 30s) story- got a company car, scooby a weekend car! If someone claims its a 30k car and the pedals are shot and the trim is knackered you can be rightly suspicious!! :lol1: Ns04 |

Cheers guys - I think - I really want it but its gonna be a strugle to spend that much and still be able to insure it right now.
Will see what he says at the weekend and offer him what I can. The car has a FSSH and was owned by one of the garages owners family, who sold it to his mate who never used it and then to this guy who has had it since about 4K . apparently has all MOT certificates to prove mileage and can no doubt double check with the dealership where it has been serviced. Apparenly due to age (mid 30s) and wife and kids he has to get something more sensible - have another car for town trips etc which has no doubt helped mileage... jee the more I type the more I want it...:freak3: Says its cleane and still drives fresh as the day he got it so guess I will know for myself on Sunday... |
I wouldnt be overly suspicious about an older performance car with low mileage - especially if it has previous MOT's and a FSH which will proove the mileage at each step.
Remember that some people would have a car like the Impreza as their second car, and only use it weekends and not for long distance commuting. IIRC Parkers or Glasses guide have the average yearly mileage as 15,000 - lots of Classics you see are well under that. And, I'd say price is about right because of the low mileage - any reasonably sought after vehicle is going to be worth more if it has very low miles. |

Bear in mind a MY99 has 2 services a year regardless of mileage if the service schedule is followed so even if was registered late 99 as mine was it should have had 13 or 14 services. If this is the case i would say it's worth the money he's after :D Simon |

Thats a valid point ..... to have FSSH it MUST have stamps every 6 months!! It has had 3 owners - so, now I am suspicious about the mileage ...... One owner was a Garage Family, the next was a Mate - so they have access to 'wind-the-clock-back' devices!! It should smell relatively new and drive faultless at that mileage - there should be no wear to speak of in the interior and the exterior may have the odd car park dent but nothing else. Had it had 1 or 2 owners I would have, personally, been happier ......... But, it's down to you (who would be its 4th owner, in 7 years, not too exciting) ..... Pete |

As for the garage - its the local Subaru Dealership so 'should' be above board. |
Sorry to be so blunt but asking opinions on a car that no-one has seen (or heard) will not do you a lot of good. If you have mileage concerns get it checked over by someone who knows the cars - either AA or mechanic if you know one.
There is no right price - only what someone is willing to pay. Good luck either way. |
Thats fair enough - just new to buying cars Private and have some (no lots) of concerns and worries - not least trying to sell my old Escort after.

Well this time next week I should have this car
Went to see it and it is imaculate. Was owned by local Scooby dealer for first 3/4 years and covered only 4000 miles in that time - Full Subaru service history (every 50 miles or so :D ) Was then sold to a banker who never used the car and was a friend of the garage owner - then sold to current owner at 4500 miles in 2003 All documentation appears in order along with PPP certificate / card Also has EBC Pads and slot/groove discs, PIAA Driving lamps and quick shift aswell as the PPP and PPP handling pack (springs/shocls and 17" alloys) tried for ages to get him to come down but he started at 8 (advert on car window) then advertised at 7500 online and dropped to 7K when I first approached him - wont budge from there though. Still to get an HPI check done but my mechanic also had a look at it and gave it a thumbs up. Cheers Alan (soon to be Scooby owner):D |

i thourght my MY99 was good with only 55,000 on the clock, averaging 9,000 a year.
i bought in in 2001 with 32,000 on the clock, so i've only put 23,000 on it in 4 years averaging less than 6 a year. a MY99 with 25 on the clock sounds a good buy. dp :) |
Stop worrying & bite his arm off ! Sounds like a perfect/rare find. Defo get it inspected though. Best of luck! Let us know how you get on. :thumb:
