Here we go again.... 400bhp????

It's quite possible over the next 12 months, the Scoob is gonna become my weekend toy only, so a power upgrade might just be on the cards.
Ok, presently i have a uk MY99 running 313/300 on the following mods -

VF35, Hybrid FMIC, Walboro 255, K&n 57i, Magnex down and centre with Ninja bb all mapped up on a Tek 3 :thumb:
400 i suppose is the target so i'm looking towards some 550's and a 20G. What else is required? Is 400 wise without going internal? :)

scoobygez 30 May 2006 07:53 PM

400 on std internals is really on the limit but i know a few lads who are just running shy of 400 on uk std internals, presume your on 440s now?? i would stick with them,i know one guy with loads of mods running shy of 400 with std 380s going bigger with injectors is not always the answer. but obviously turbo and a good mapper ie andy f will help!!

Rajaman 30 May 2006 08:04 PM

A 20G won't make 400 BHP without Octane Boosters, Also your 5 speed box won't cope too well with that much power
Equal length headers will help,+ I suggest an APS SR40 or GT30 Hybrid, 6 speed box, 3 port boost solenoid, helix ceramic clutch & you will need an uprated Dump valve
BTW I run a 400 BHP sti 7 with the above mods + lots more
Oh yeah, AP 6 pots will be a must
You might want to think about Arrow rods + cosworth pistons as well
If you want any more details of my specs drop me a PM
All the best
Ray

my wrx currently running 386 at scooby clinic - which is probably over 400 at well Lane ;)

have a read here if you want to see how I went from a simular stage to you

quote from andy forrest.
AFP5-20 - this is also a variation on the TD05. This time fitted with a much larger, high efficiency 20G compressor wheel and compressor housing. The high efficiency compressor allows the turbo to run at a lower rpm whilst still producing boost. This results in similar spool up to the 5-16 but with a 50bhp increase in airflow capability. This was the turbo used on our own RA to produce 440bhp (running fuel additives) . 400 bhp is achievable in conjunction with full supporting modifications .

internals will be ok if your not constantly hammering it gearbox is weakest link here. so jdm sti 8 6 speeder is the way forward.

my car struggled to make ( well it dosn't) on a bigger turbo but mapped by Bob R not Andy F

scoobygez 30 May 2006 08:24 PM

its all down to the mapper i think, they usually map to around 80% of power rather than going full hog and straining everything 80% is safe bet may be yours is less or just not as good at mapping as andy forrest???

Sacrilege ;) :lol1:

what im trying to say is what will get 400 bhp on a std internal STI may not get the same results on a std internal wrx

it wont thats right wrx dont have forged pistons as std or sodium coated ones.

p1mark 31 May 2006 06:03 AM

Rich is right - you will struggle to safely run the boost needed on those turbos to achieve 400 BHP as you are limited by the weak pistons.

Rich and my own set ups are almost identical, but i achieve 405 BHP simply because i have STI pistons and can run a bit more boost.

Hmmmmmmmm this could be more pricey than i'd planned :(
Wish i had the money for drb5's car :D
I really want a BIG hit in the back when i push the go peddle. My present 313 is nice, but doesn't give me the hit i want

Oh don't say that  your power levels are what I'm likely to acheive when I get my car mapped up from a std TD04 to VF34 with supporting mods.

Maybe you're just being greedy!!! ;) :D

Mine is MY99 UK too.

Going much further than your current spec and you should budget for a decent box (£2kish for 6 speed, £3kish for PPG). Type R box is a cheaper option but not as strong.

16g @1.5bar will make it a nice quick car....if you fancy spending big money then you could buy a 18g.

Personally I would find out what the limiting factors are on your current spec and make the changes along with a map to get the most out of your VF35. If you dont mind blowing the box a 16gs power delivery may be what you are after.

Brun 31 May 2006 04:30 PM

NS04 - Don't get me wrong, the difference over the TD04 is huge. When i really work the car, it is much faster than with the TD04. You will not be dissapointed. The only reason i brought this up is that my car may be turning into a weekend toy. If it's gonna be just that - it needs to be bonkers :D
Cheers bob. I understand what you're saying, but as i said to NS04, it's gonna be a weekend bonkers thing, so i think a 16g won't do it for me.
You got me thinking now - how do i take the VF35 to it's limit :wonder:

Best to speak to your mapper.

Welloilbeefhooked 31 May 2006 09:42 PM

Cue Graham!!

Where is 911 when an emergency occurs!!

Graham made 407bhp on using the 20g and supporting mods, without additives I believe.

Phew! You had me worried there! :D I wouldn't mine to be bonkers- just feel the car has a lot more to give than with the Td04.

Have you ever driven a Scooby with a BIG turbo mate? It might be an idea before you comit. I saw some footage on here of someone with a BIG power WRX and -although very impressive- (the turbo sounded like it was creating its own weather system :D ) I suspect that as a consequence of the delivery, it wouldn't be that much fun on typical UK roads! I could be talking out my bottom of course!! :D

I think you should try before you buy though! :thumb:

400 BHP is a nice figure NS04. my P1 at just above that is bloody fast, does not want to swap ends, driveable, and you can make your underpants last the normal week:lol1:

I drove a 490 BHP classic and that was far more disconcerting and required a bit of concentration TBH

Brun 01 June 2006 07:01 AM

Good thinking NS04. Anybody wanna take me for a ride in a 400 brake Scoob - or even let me have a blast? :notworthy

p1mark 01 June 2006 07:14 AM

You, are quite welcome to a sit in the passenger seat of mine, im in Leicester straight down the M1. used to take me 1 1/2 hours to get to Dewsbury in west yorks when i was seeing a rude young West Yorks lass.

Brun 01 June 2006 07:37 AM

Cool. I'm quite often in Newark, so not too far from you. I'll give you a shout sometime :thumb:
